The original campus was in Elko until 18 74 when it moved to Reno. The Land Grant schools had to provide certain things as part of their charter. Agriculture, ROTC and in some cases Mining. They are public schools for the most part and not necessarily thought of as top academic schools though some are very fine Universities.. Because UNLV was originally a satellite campus of Nevada and there was no State Of Nevada University System you folks chose to use that to prove you were a land grant school. After 50 years of being your own independent institution you had to codify, UNR, a school you despise, as the Flagship University of the State Of Nevada University System. This was not done to enhance or hurt your academic standing..It was not done to diminish UNR. It was done as a money grab by Las Vegas business interests.. You had to do this because only the federal government can determine who is a Land Grant Institution. In the federal government view Nevada, Reno is the LG in the state of Nevada. The Nevada Legislature voted to put you back under the UNR umbrella so that you could apply for Land Grant money. You did not hurt UNR in any way and no one outside of Nevada will think of you as an individual Land Grant But all of this is about money..It has nothing to do with Academic status or how other universities and colleges across the country rank both schools.. This is not. big brother/little brother thing. It was a way to maybe get at more federal funds. Nothing more..
