The Oscar is undoubtedly a species of fish worthy of a place in any aquarium, as long as its large enough, in any home. They are attractive, intelligent, fairly easy to keep, and certainly entertaining to watch. They also have a fabulous lifespan, often living for up to twenty years, and grow to a massive 12 inches long and sometimes even bigger!A graceful swimmer that has often been known to respond to their keepers by wagging their tails and shaking their heads at the sight of them, the Oscar really is a delight. However, this kind of behavior can be a little deceiving as they are certainly not all sugar and spice. The Oscar also has an aggressive streak that it shows when sharing its aquarium. It would be fair to say that the Oscar is not the best at making friends with other fish, but nor is it the worst. Rather, it is somewhere in the middle and requires some care being taken when it comes to choosing tank mates. Ideal tank mates for the Oscar will be firstly large enough that they will not fit in their mouths to be eaten. And secondly, passive enough to stay out of the Oscars way whilst being aggressive enough to defend themselves if need be.Oscar Fish will grow to over 12-14” and need a large tank.Keep them well fed, and provide some big rocks and caves with plenty of water volume and a good size aquarium and you’ll have no issues finding suitable tank mates for Tiger Oscars. If you’re wondering what we fed our Oscars,we used Aqueon Jumbo Cichlid pellets which are a perfect size for 6-7″ Plus Oscars. If you’re are smaller then you’ll need the same product but choose the smaller or medium size pellets. With the above in mind, we have put together a list of fantastic tank mate candidates. All of these fish species should do well with the rambunctious Oscar and are delightful in themselves. So, without further ado, here it is, our………9 Perfect Tank Mates For Oscars1 Sailfin PlecoAt approximately 18 inches in length, the Sailfin Plecostomus is a real giant of the aquarium and perfectly capable of holding its own with the Oscar. This, however, is rarely needed though, partly due to the bottom-dwelling nature of the Sailfin Pleco, and also its inactivity.Plecos, in general, spend most of their time laying in one position, often behind driftwood or in caves. Should it need to defend itself against the Oscar it has, amongst it armory, a sharp and spiny dorsal fin capable of causing injury. Sailfin Plecos are all different shades of brown with lighter patterned markings.2 Ornate BichirConsidered the most attractive of the Bichir group, the Ornate has a silver belly with black and light gold mottling and stripes. All of this is crowned with a spiny dorsal fin that runs right down its back and makes quite the formidable defensive weapon. They can reach an incredible length of up to 24 inches, twice the size. LeporinusThe Black Banded Leporinus may seem an usual choice for an Oscar tank mate since they can be timid and skittish at times. However, they are also very good at keeping themselves to themselves and avoiding trouble. They can occasionally nip at other fish’s fins but this is nothing, when in with an Oscar, to be worried about. The Black Banded Leporinus is a stunning looking black and yellow to gold striped fish that can reach up to 12 inches in length. They have an elongated shape, rather like that of the red tail or rainbow shark, and spend a lot of time near the bottom.9 Black Convict cichlidLike the Silver Dollar, the Black Convict Cichlid only has a maximum size of 6 inches. What they lack in size, however, they make up for in feistiness. The Black Convict Cichlid is definitely capable of holding its own against the Oscar. They also have speed on their side and can quicky escape a Tiger Oscar attack behind rocks and caves. Just make sure the rocks are big enough that the Oscar cannot move them. You’ll be suprissed how strong an Oscar fish is!The Black Convict Cichlid has a gray body with black stripes, and a greenish tint on the fins. As they age, the male of the species will develop a fatty lump on the forehead.Juvenile Tiger Oscars can live in a 50-75 gallon tank but will need more space as they grow. Conclusion: Which fish can live with Tiger Oscars? If you’re just thinking about buying an Oscar Fish then you simply have to read our Complete Tiger Oscar Guide. This has all the basic information you’ll need to know including cost of keeping one, breeding, size, diet and lots more helpful information.Although Tiger Oscars can be very powerful and sometimes aggressive fish they normally live happily with many species of fish as long as they have rocks and caves to escape to if your Oscar decides to go on the attack.Any hardy species above over 3-4” with suitable rocks and Caves will be fine with Oscars. I had my pair in a 150 Gallon tank for many years and had many different species share their space without issues. Oscars have a huge lifespan and can live up to 20 Years. They are a longterm choice and you’ll need to plan for the future buying one of these fish. You’re in for the long ride with these fish.I kept mine well fed and they grow fast and because I had a suitable size aquarium ( Read what size tanks are best for Oscars here ) with plenty of big rocks and caves I had no fish fatalities due to the Tiger Oscars themselves.[author title=”About the Author”]I have been working in the tropical fish industry for over 30 years now and I’m still learning. Ample hiding spaces in the rearing tank helps reduce aggression and allows the fry to establish their territories.Taxonomy and Species InformationClassification DetailsOscar fish, scientifically known as Astronotus ocellatus, belong to the cichlid family. This family includes many other popular aquarium fish species. The classification of oscar fish helps us understand their evolutionary relationships and unique characteristics.Varieties of Oscar FishThere are several color varieties of oscar fish, each with its own distinctive appearance and color patterns. One of the most well-known varieties is the red oscar fish. These vibrant fish display a beautiful deep red hue that can add a striking pop of color to any aquarium. In addition to red oscars, there are other color morphs available for enthusiasts to choose from. Albino oscars have a pale white or pinkish body with bright red eyes, creating an eye-catching contrast. Tiger oscars feature black stripes on a lighter background, resembling the pattern of a tiger’s coat. Wild-type oscars have a more natural coloring, with shades of gray, brown, and black. These different color morphs have been developed through selective breeding techniques over the years. By carefully choosing parent fish with desired traits and colors, breeders have been able to create new variations within the oscar fish population. The availability of these different varieties allows aquarium hobbyists to select oscar fish that match their personal preferences and aesthetic goals for their tanks. Some may prefer the boldness of red oscars, while others may be drawn to the unique patterns found in tiger or wild-type oscars. It’s important to note that while color variety is one aspect that sets these fish apart visually, all oscar fish share similar care requirements in terms of water conditions, diet, and tank size. Regardless of their coloration or pattern, they require proper filtration systems and regular water changes to maintain optimal. Download Tiger Oscar Aquarium for free. You can find oscar fish pretty much anywhere in the Amazon River Basin. They typically live in low-flow, slow-moving white waters, which act as perfect hiding spots from predators- especially if there are greenery and branches. As for their size:They tend to grow to between 14-16 inches (35-40cm). Not small, ey?! But even more impressive than their size is the fact that they can grow super fast, sometimes at a rate of one inch per month!Despite having types of oscars available, Oscar fish commonly found in the aquarium hobby are typically one of three variations: tiger oscars, red oscars, and albino oscars.Tiger oscars are the most common breed; we generally consider them to be the ‘original’ oscar fish. They have red and orange patterns on top of a dark brown/gray base. They’re pure breeds, and because of this, possess the true characteristics and behaviors of typical oscar fish.Red oscars are found in a variety of shades, from crimson and copper to rusty orange. Red oscars don’t have the markings or patterns characteristic of tiger breeds.Alongside tiger oscars, red oscar fish are the most commonly kept breeds. Albino oscars are white in color and have shiny, velvety skin and red eyes. Lemon oscars are noteworthy, but rare. If you find some available, you’re in for a treat.Oscar fish are normally pretty aggressive. But during breeding times? Multiply that by 100. Breeding makes oscar fish extremely territorial. And as for their diets, they’re known for their voracious appetite and eagerness to consume anything small enough to fitTiger Oscar with New Aquarium - YouTube

White in shading and they have shiny, velvety skin and red eyes. Similarly, they can also be found in a blend of red and orange. Also, they are monomorphic, which means both males and females look exactly alike and this makes them one of the most intriguing tropical freshwater fish. Often, juvenile albino oscars have a different coloration from adults, and are striped with white and orange wavy bands with spotted heads.Albino oscar size and lifespanAlbino oscars can get quite large, usually 12 to 14 inches and should be kept in a 75 gallon or larger aquarium. Typically, they can live up to 10 to 12years and sometimes 15 years, depending on the quality of care given to it. An albino oscar similarly grow fasts like other oscars. Furthermore, providing the right diet to your oscar can increase its life expectancy. Albino oscar behaviorAlbino oscar fish are popular tropical fish for the home aquarium, but they can be aggressive and territorial. However, they usually lay claim to a particular area and attack any fish that encroaches their territory. Once the oscar establishes a territory, it will vigorously defend it by chasing away other fishes. Therefore, this could make them a difficult species to handle.Albino oscars are typically omnivores, they can eatanything you give to them. In the wild, they typically eat:InsectsWorms Smaller fishesPlantsBerries and fruit that falls into their environmentWhen keeping Oscars as aquarium fish, choose acommercial fish food suitable for fishes like Oscars and other cichlids. Also, they will eat other fish, so be careful about placing smaller fish such asguppies or goldfish in the tank with them unless choosing feederfish specifically to enhance your Oscar fish’s diet. You canalso supplement their diet with live/frozen mealworms and insects (which areprotein-rich). Some examples are bloodworms, grasshoppers, brine shrimp, anddaphnia. This encourages them to catch their food and bring out their naturalhunting instincts. Remember that your Oscar is primarily carnivorous (eats meat), so provide them with a high quality, high protein diet. Also, many high quality processed fish foods are available on the market today, and most frozen fish foods are also appropriate for feeding your Oscar.Albino oscar tank requirementsTo keep your albino oscar healthy in your home aquarium, always remember to provide them with plenty of clean, warm water. In addition, your Oscar’s temperature should be about 77° Fahrenheit (25° Celsius), and ide`ally should remain between 74° and 81° F (23.5° and 27° C), so you need an aquarium heater and a thermometer.Keeping your Oscar too warm for long periods of time will result in Oxygen deprivation, which can cause nerve damage, heart damage, and can seriously hamper the immune system. Similarly, keeping them too cool or exposing them to sudden chill can also hamper their immune system. In addition, an impaired immune system makes them more susceptible to many diseases, from easily treatable Ich to more difficult diseases such as hole-in-the-head.Oscar tank size requirementYour Oscar aquarium should provide at least 30 gallons of space (about 114 liters) per Oscar, plus anyComments

And as for their diets, they’re known for their voracious appetite and eagerness to consume anything small enough to fit
