Hemingway Editor: Pros and Cons of the Hemingway
As I have acknowledged before, writing is a daunting process, but there are many online programs available to aid in this process. In this post, I will be reviewing the Hemingway Editor to help you determine if it is the right program for you.In my previous blog post, I discussed and reviewed Grammarly, a program available for writers to check and improve their grammar in their work. As you know, grammar is an integral part of writing, whether personal or professional. Another vital element of writing is the work’s readability. As an author, you want your reader to read your work with relative ease.Hemingway Editor can help with that. What Hemingway Editor DoesHemingway Editor is a free, online program that targets sentence structure. The program’s stated goal is to make your writing bold and clear. Hemingway Editor does so by providing suggestions on how to simplify lengthy and complex sentence structures to strengthen your writing style. The program operates off a color-coded highlight system. For example, lengthy sentences are highlighted in yellow, while dense sentences are highlighted in red. It provides an overall readability score to help the user gauge how simple or complex their writing is.Hemingway Editor gives you an option to omit suggestions if some of the selected recommendations go against the style or tone you are going for. I will caution that Hemingway Editor does not check for grammatical errors, so it would best be used in conjunction with a program that checks grammar, such as Grammarly, if that is something you feel you need.Additionally, I do not advise that Hemingway Editor or any other program replace the advice of a professional editor. Instead, they can help you polish your manuscript before an editorial submission. The Two Options: Hemingway Editor Free and PaidHemingway Editor offers both a free and paid option for its users. The free option is built into the website. To use, simply begin typing or copy and paste your work on the site. The website allows users to switch between the write and edit functions, giving you the option to either write and edit in real-time or write first and edit after.Alternatively, a desktop app version of Hemingway Editor is available for $20. It is available on either Mac OS or Windows and provides all the features of the website edition of the program and a little more. With the desktop app, users can utilize Hemingway Editor

Learn more about the technical aspects of grammar. You can dig deeper into Grammarly features and benefits here.4. Hemingway EditorWhat It Does: Hemingway Editor is like a spellchecker, but for style. It provides a readability score — the lowest grade level someone would need to understand your text — and analyzes your writing to identify areas for improvement. Because it doesn’t require an internet connection, you can use it anywhere.Price: Free online, and a one-time payment of $19.99 for the desktop version, which is available for both Mac and PC.Who It’s For: AnyoneHow It Works: Paste your text into the dashboard and scan for highlighted sections of text. The highlighted text is color coded depending on your area of improvement, whether it’s hard-to-read sentences, the presence of adverbs, or passive voice. The Best Part: In addition to providing examples on how to fix passive voice or complex phrases, Hemingway Editor also identifies how many “-ly” adverbs and passive voice constructions you’ve used and suggests a maximum number based on your word count. In my prologue, for example, I had one use of passive voice, and Hemingway Editor suggested aiming for six uses or fewer — which I nailed. These recommendations reinforce the idea that not all adverbs or passive voice constructions are bad, and that’s something other tools miss. What Would Make It Better: Hemingway Editor was the cleanest and easiest to use of the free editing tools, but it’s not a true grammar checker or proofreader. Even though it’s not meant to catch grammar and spelling mistakes, any editing application that catches those mistakes is instantly more attractive. Our Recommendation: Use Hemingway Editor to increase the readability of your writing and identify problem sentences during the copyediting stage, but supplement your efforts with a grammar and spell checker.5. WordRakeWhat It Does: WordRake cuts out the unnecessary words or phrases that creep into your writing. It works with Microsoft Word and Outlook, depending on which license you purchase. I tested the Microsoft Word version.Price: The Microsoft Word version is available for Mac or Windows, and you’ll pay $129 for a year or $259 for three years. The Microsoft Word and Outlook package version is only available for Windows, and it costs $199 for a year or $399 for three.Who It’s For: Bloggers, authors and editors using Microsoft Word or Outlook. How It Works: WordRake is an add-in for Microsoft products and requires you to install the program before using it, though it’s as easy as following the instructions. Select the text you want to edit, then use the WordRake add-in. It uses Track Changes to suggest edits, which you can accept or reject. The Best Part: WordRake is as close as you can get to an automatic editor. It appealed to me more as an editor than a writer, but it’sHemingway Editor for Mac and Windows – Hemingway App
Hay que esperar lo peor. Y que si pasan diez años y vuelves a leer eso que escribiste y piensas que es bueno, entonces que nada más alrededor importe.Author 2 books75 followersJanuary 14, 2012I have read quite a few books about the art of writing, and what I've observed overtime is that, really, it's best to get advice from those that have done it their whole lives, instead of college professors and other pseudo-intellectuals. Hemingway, or Papa, as some call him, has a lot of opinions and thoughts on writing in here, but not a whole lot of advice. Which is fine, cause after a while you begin to agree with him: that talking about writing ruins the magic of it, ruins the drive. It's best to just do it and live by it and then you will know when you're doing good work or bad. non-fiction writing95 reviews3 followersJanuary 20, 2013I felt like a voyeur reading this book. Hemingway expressly stated that he did not want anyone to publish his letters, yet here we have a collection of Hemingways' thoughts on writing as collected in his novels and correspondences. There was even a section where the letters were to his publisher, stating that he did not want his letters published; so the editor of this book is highly aware of the wishes, yet for some reason we have this book. I'm glad I got to know Hemingway a bit better, but I still felt bad for reading it. I remember thinking, "Okay, should I stop reading this? Hemingway wouldn't want me to read this. Or would he, since it's already been published?"Anyway. Hemingway was a very opinionated man, and those opinions come across strongly in this collection. He seems a bit grumpy about certain things, yet always maintains a good sense of humor. He holds no quarter for other writers and calls shots as he sees them. The way many people refer to him (an egocentric man's-man, big game hunter, etc.) comes across in his treatment of other writers and naive youngsters, yet I don't think Hemingway was mean or overly cross. He simply had no qualms with stating his opinion, and sometimes it was a negative one. Either way, Hemingway has a lot of good advice and some bad advice. Anyone reading what another writer thinks about writing should take into consideration that that's what worked for HIM/HER,Hemingway - Download Hemingway Editor App for Android
With Pfeiffer during a stop in Paris, before returning to Schruns to finish the revisions in March.[54] The manuscript arrived in New York in April; he corrected the final proof in Paris in August 1926, and Scribner's published the novel in October.[53][55][56]The Sun Also Rises epitomized the post-war expatriate generation,[57] received good reviews and is "recognized as Hemingway's greatest work".[58] Hemingway himself later wrote to his editor Max Perkins that the "point of the book" was not so much about a generation being lost, but that "the earth abideth forever"; he believed the characters in The Sun Also Rises may have been "battered" but were not lost.[59]Hemingway's marriage to Hadley deteriorated as he was working on The Sun Also Rises.[56] In early 1926, Hadley became aware of his affair with Pfeiffer, who came to Pamplona with them that July.[60][61] On their return to Paris, Hadley asked for a separation; in November she formally requested a divorce. They split their possessions while Hadley accepted Hemingway's offer of the proceeds from The Sun Also Rises.[62] They were divorced in January 1927, and Hemingway married Pfeiffer in May.[63]Ernest and Pauline Hemingway in Paris in 1927Before his marriage to Pfeiffer, Hemingway converted to Catholicism.[64] They honeymooned in Le Grau-du-Roi, where he contracted anthrax, and he planned his next collection of short stories,[65] Men Without Women, which was published in October 1927,[66] and included his boxing story "Fifty Grand". Cosmopolitan magazine editor-in-chief Ray Long praised "Fifty Grand", calling it, "one of the best short stories that ever came to my hands ... the best prize-fight story I ever read ... a remarkable piece of realism."[67]By the end of the year Pauline was pregnant and wanted to move back to America. Dos Passos recommended Key West, and they left Paris in March 1928. Hemingway suffered a severe head injury in their Paris bathroom when he pulled a skylight down on his head thinking he was pulling on a toilet chain. This left him with a prominent forehead scar, which he carried for the rest of his life. When Hemingway was asked about the scar, he was reluctant to answer.[68] After his departure from Paris, Hemingway "never again lived in a big city".[69]The Hemingway House in Key West, Florida, where he lived between 1931 and 1939 and where he wrote To Have and Have NotHemingway and Pauline went to Kansas City, Missouri, where their son Patrick was born on June 28, 1928, at Bell Memorial Hospital.[70] Pauline had a difficult delivery; Hemingway wrote a fictionalized version of the event in A Farewell to Arms. After Patrick's birth, they traveled to Wyoming, Massachusetts, and New York.[71] On December 6, Hemingway was in New York visiting Bumby, about to board a train to Florida, when he received the news that his father Clarence had killed himself.[note 2][72] Hemingway was devastated, having earlier written to his father telling him not to worry about financial difficulties; the letter arrived minutes after the suicide. He realized how Hadley must have felt after. Health problems in the years following the war: in a 1945 car accident, he injured his knee and sustained another head wound. A few years later Mary broke first her right ankle and then her left in successive skiing accidents. A 1947 car accident left Patrick with a head wound, severely ill and delirious. The doctor in Cuba diagnosed schizophrenia, and sent him for 18 sessions of electroconvulsive therapy.[129]Hemingway sank into depression as his literary friends began to die: in 1939 William Butler Yeats and Ford Madox Ford; in 1940 F. Scott Fitzgerald; in 1941 Sherwood Anderson and James Joyce; in 1946 Gertrude Stein; and the following year in 1947, Max Perkins, Hemingway's long-time Scribner's editor, and friend.[130] During this period, he suffered from severe headaches, high blood pressure, weight problems, and eventually diabetes—much of which was the result of previous accidents and many years of heavy drinking.[131] In January 1946, he began work on The Garden of Eden, finishing 800 pages by June.[note 6][132] During the post-war years, he also began work on a trilogy tentatively titled "The Land", "The Sea" and "The Air", which he wanted to combine in one novel titled The Sea Book. Both projects stalled. Mellow writes that Hemingway's inability to write was "a symptom of his troubles" during these years.[note 7][133]In 1948, Hemingway and Mary traveled to Europe, staying in Venice for several months. While there, Hemingway fell in love with the then 19-year-old Adriana Ivancich. The platonic love affair inspired the novel Across the River and into the Trees, written in Cuba during a time of strife with Mary, and published in 1950 to negative reviews.[134] The following year, furious at the critical reception of Across the River and Into the Trees, Hemingway wrote the draft of The Old Man and the Sea in eight weeks, saying that it was "the best I can write ever for all of my life".[131] Published in September 1952,[135] The Old Man and the Sea became a book-of-the-month selection, made Hemingway an international celebrity, and won the Pulitzer Prize in May 1953. In June, he departed Cuba for his second trip to Africa.[136][137]Hemingway and Mary in Africa before the two plane accidentsIn January 1954 while in Africa, Hemingway was almost fatally injured in successive plane crashes. He had chartered a sightseeing flight over the Belgian Congo as a Christmas present to Mary. On their way to photograph Murchison Falls from the air, the plane struck an abandoned utility pole and was forced into a crash landing. Hemingway sustained injuries to his back and shoulder. Mary sustained broken ribs and went into shock. After a night in the brush, they chartered a boat on the river and arrived in Butiaba, where they were met by a pilot who had been searching for them. He assured them he could fly out, but the landing strip was too rough and the plane exploded in flames. Mary and the pilot escaped through a broken window. Hemingway had to smash his way.
