Fortress Forever is a free multiplayer first-person shooter which aims to bring the fast-paced gameplay of the earliest games in the Team Fortress series (QuakeWorld Team Fortress and Team Fortress Classic) into the technology of Valve's Source engine. Unlike Valve's official sequel, Team Fortress 2, which revamped the artstyle and simplified the gameplay of the series by removing bunnyhopping and grenades, Fortress Forever sticks closely to the artstyle and gameplay of the original games. Fortress Forever was first released as a modification for Half-Life 2 on September 13, 2007 before becoming a standalone game on Steam on March 27, 2015.The official game modes feature two or more color-coded teams competing against each other to achieve objectives. Game modes include Capture the Flag, where the first team to steal the opposing team's flag and bring it back to their base a certain number of times wins; Territorial Control, where teams must capture and hold areas of the level; and Payload, where one team must escort a player-controlled "Civilian" class to a safe zone while protecting them from the opposing team. There are nine playable classes to choose from by default, each with a unique selection of weapons and abilities/statistics, with a tenth class, Civilian, only being playable in Payload.

BY THE OTHER TEAM!" -Soldier, when my team lost the battle. As a veteran of the original Team Fortress Classic mod in the first engines used in Half-Life, I was more than excited to hear a sequel in development. There was something to team fortress that really made it stick out as a competitive online shooter. Something unique. Something that's usually tossed aside by other games in favor of useless flashy graphics and unnecessary variations of the same weapon. As you will find out when playing, it is the class system. Mainly deep balance between the classes and their abilities, which do far more impressive changes in gameplay than in other class-based games like Modern Warfare and the like. Team Fortress 2, like Team Fortress Classic, emphasizes the difference not only with different equipment, but with different abilities, ranging from running faster, taking more damage and surviving, healing, and even disguising yourself as the other team. The changes are even more drastic in Team Fortress 2, and some things have been removed (namely, class-based grenades), but for a good purpose, and the game has never been better. Each class, now more than just a soldier, represents a person from somewhere all over the globe. Not only does a country of origin add to the character and bring them to life, but with the addition of the source engine and TF2's Pixar-esque art style, the characters all seem like living, breathing 3D cartoon characters, each with their own hysterical lines of dialogue, facial expressions, and taunt moves. In addition to the already fantastic design, the characters all have unique personalities and characteristics, as well as great voice actors to back them up, and make the game much more fun when ranting to your teammates via the shout-out commands or insulting the other team, and even the battlecry. The game's theme also presents an interesting concept to the red vs blue world that is TF2; all Capture the Flag/Intelligence are symmetrical on each team's side per map, except for one thing; one team has a high-tech base with steel walls, the other has a wooden barn with hay as a floor. Not that it has any role to play in gameplay; it's just fun to consider an army of farm-boys and pyro (presumably a girl by many fans) taking on a government military base of operations. Additionally, pretty much every conflict ended. Old grudges were settled, mysteries were solved, the Gravel Wars were over, and the world's remaining Australium was disposed of. Threats like The Administrator, the Mann clan and Team Fortress Classic were dead. Whatever new mercenary wars or family feuds emerge in this world won't affect Team Fortress and their loved ones anymore. The world of Team Fortress 2 as players knew it was over, and it ended in the most satisfying way possible. Team Fortress 2 Comics Issue #7 Gave the Mercenaries & Players the Closure They've Waited Years For The Comic Ended the Story, Not the Game's Existence or Future This doesn't mean that Team Fortress 2 is ending any time soon. For one, the game will only truly be over when Valve shuts down its servers. The studio has currently shown no signs of doing this in the near future. What's more, the game is still reliably popular and profitable, despite it being long past its prime. Just this year, Team Fortress 2's player count doubled and spiked for the first time in nearly a decade after Valve caved into widespread public pressure and fixed the bot problem that plagued the game for so long. The blog post that announced Issue #7's release also seemingly hinted at a coming update that will make up for the last disappointing ones (namely "Meet Your Match" and "Jungle Inferno"), exciting fans over the game's potential return to form. Some even think the blog coyly hinted at the long-awaited "Heavy Update." The game is also nearing its 20th anniversary, and fans are holding onto the hope that Valve will celebrate this milestone the way it did for Half-Life and Half-Life 2. Few if any games released in the 2000s have as much longevity as Team Fortress 2 does, and it would be ill-advised for Valve to just kill it. Valve simply has more reasons, both practical and emotional, to keep the game around for a little while longer than otherwise.
