Kosmonaut had great ideas, but not the greatest execution in several facets. With SkyRoads, the improvements were more noticeable, making it a fun experience. One would imagine the Xmas Special would be a nice gift to try at the end of 1994. It follows the same template in gameplay, but that's it. This is one that manages to be worse than Kosmonaut with a challenge that is near impossible to beat and a very messy level design.Graphics: Xmas Special runs on the same graphical engine, so it will feel mostly the same. It incorporates some of the same backgrounds like in SkyRoads, which is still excellent. The newer ones are more Christmas themed. A little more cartoonish, but impressive. There is a more expanded use to the color palette and it covers up a bit of the chunky look of the roads, but not all. It still runs smoothly. Hard to imagine, but the small improvement helps it slightly.Audio: Nothing was changed with Xmas Special's audio. On the one hand, it's still good. The same music you heard in SkyRoads is back, making it the case of not needing to fix something that isn't broken. There is some disappointment considering you don't get any Christmas themed tunes. Maybe Blue Moon couldn't afford it, but it's still disappointing. No new sound effects were added. You still get a lot of landings on the road and explosions from hitting walls. Still a great facet, but not to the same level of the original.Gameplay: SkyRoads Xmas Special follows the same premise as its predecessor. Driving a spaceship, you are racing the roads on your own, making it to the end of it. No opponents, no fights. It's still a platformer in a way with jumping onto other elevations and doesn't punish you for getting on a higher road. You get the same controls as before. Move left or right, increase or decrease the speed of the thrusters along with the mentioned jumping. No changes, which is a good thing. There are 30 new roads to try out with ten worlds. Some of them are the same places, only a different kind of road, which there are three in each world. Like before, you can choose any you want if you want the difficult ones finished first. Or you can go in order or any way that you want. Still plenty of hazards that get in your way. It still relies on memory and being quick with your keyboard or joystick. Expect to repeat levels over and over until you figure out the intricacies of them. The similarities are there with issues beyond the platforming. Distances vary again. Either you will finish a road in about 30 seconds or take a minute or two. Fuel and oxygen is still an important aspect. As with the original, you want to make it to the end without depleting any of the two. Otherwise, you have to restart the level. It will depend on how quick or slow it

Drains. It continues to give supply boosts when necessary. Since it is in space, gravity varies. Either you get a normal jump, jump like you're on the moon, or stick to the ground. On paper, this is at best good, and at worst, decent but a little disappointing. SkyRoads Xmas Special fails on a few aspects that bog it down really bad. I've played my share of difficult games, but nothing to the level of this. The original SkyRoads wasn't easy either, but it was more satisfying figuring out each road. Here, it's an absolute mess. Level designs feel very random after the first couple worlds. Very clunky, very uninspired, this feels like it was meant to be for experts who wanted to see how they fared. Unfortunately, I'd doubt people could get half the roads completed casually. What hurts the levels are gimmicks and an over reliance on platforming. The gravity is toyed with too much. It's tweaked enough to where they want you to strategize, but it doesn't work when you have to worry about your oxygen and fuel. They went overboard with some of the color coded roads that benefit or weaken the spaceship. With platforming, it is used as a crutch for the gameplay here and it is very sloppy. What I see is they wanted you to find that sweet spot to where the speed works together with the jumps.Considering what DOS was capable of back in 1994, Blue Moon may have taxed it for the wrong reasons. As a result, there is a lot of slowdown. Usually, it's when there's a bit of roads on screen and you're trying to go fast and time your jumps. It's for a second and then it speeds back up, leading to the ship's demise. Jumping may feel unresponsive at times, which will lead to a lot more restarts. As with the original, it's a bare package, though that should be the least of your worries. Outside of some graphics, the Christmas theme is barely used. The end result, overall, is a game that tried to be cute with the core gameplay and have alterations, but fails by a huge margin.Replay Value: If you're up to it, it should take a few hours to if you're brave enough to memorize the level layouts.Recommendation: SkyRoads Xmas Special is a definite skip, even though it is free on Blue Moon's website. Play the original or Kosmonaut. High difficulty does not always make a game better.

Hi there! It’s Antonio ‘Antares88‘ Scacchetti here, writing you from the cold lands of Estonia. That’s where in 2013 I and my dearest friend Massimiliano ‘Haematinon‘ Nigro started our tiny game studio, Dev9k, under the wings of the accelerator GameFounders. This DevLog is about, Nirvana Pilot Yume, an upcoming anime-style Visual Novel about space races. We’ll talk about many aspects of the development, from angles that should interest both players and fellow developers: risks and challenges, our processes, how we do art and narration. We previously worked on other Visual Novels, first with some prototypes in 2015, and then in 2016-2017 we lent ourselves to another studio for a yet to be announced project. It came natural, at the end of that, to proceed on the same path. This time, however, we wanted to spice things up and mix the traditional visual novel recipe (read the story, make choices) with skill-based gameplay sections.Nirvana Pilot Yume is about the dreams of a young girl, Yume (which actually is “dream” in Japanese), and her quest to become a Nirvana Pilot. In this distant future, spaceships can go faster than light and interplanetary disputes are settled through space races. The other key element of the story is redemption: Yume seeks for help from the legendary Eye Aldaine, now retired and fallen in disgrace after a tragic accident.Between the story events, the player will run the actual races in a retro-themed, low poly environment, with a gameplay inspired from a 1993 classic: Skyroads. I used to play it a lot

Biography: Calkins graduated from the Chicago Art Institute. His first job was cartoonist for the Detroit Free Press. During World War I, Calkins served in the Army Air Service as a pilot and flight instructor.Following the war, he worked as an editorial cartoonist for the Chicago American until 1929, the year he began drawing Buck Rogers. (Calkins is credited as the artist for Buck Rogers from January 1929 to November 1947, and writer from September 1939 to November 1947, but other sources indicate he stopped drawing the strip around 1932.)Calkins also co-created and illustrated the aviation-themed comic strip Skyroads, with aviation pioneer and fellow World War I pilot Lester J. Maitland, from 1929 to 1933 (when it was taken over by Russell Keaton). (Keaton has also been credited with ghosting the Sunday Buck Rogers, which debuted on March 30, 1930.)Calkins died at the age of 67 in Tucson, Arizona, as the result of a heart attack.Notes: To be confirmed against the Who's Who entry.
