Starting point for analytical data that will help you learn more about your website and how customers are using it.To begin, click on “Conversions” and then “Funnel Visualization” to see what the funnel conversion rates are for your site.If you don’t have this set up, you’ll first need to set up conversion goals, and then you’ll need to set up a conversion funnel. Conversion goals show you what percentage of your site visitors convert, and the conversion funnel shows you how many visitors move on from one step of the process to the next.If you’re site visitors follow a standard conversion funnel, you can benefit a lot from evaluating this information in Google Analytics. For example, if you run a SaaS website that directs visitors from the homepage to a pricing page to a free trial sign-up page and finally to a confirmation page, then the conversion funnel in Google Analytics will show you what percentage of visitors move from the homepage to the pricing page, what percentage moves from the pricing page to the sign-up page, etc.Knowing this allows you to measure each step of the funnel to find out where there might be a bottleneck for sign ups. If 50% of visitors move from the homepage to the pricing page, but only 5% move on to the sign-up page, you need to figure out how you can get more people to move on to your sign-up page in order to increase overall conversions. 2025-04-13Guaranteed at a higher rate and non-guaranteed at a lower rate. The simplest and most well-known example of non-guaranteed impressions is the use of remnant advertising networks such as Google AdSense. Networks allow a site to generate revenue from unsold inventory. I have also used unsold inventory to promote:Contact us about advertising.Website sections with high CPMs.Sections that are falling short of guaranteed impressions.A good sales team should try to sell some of that inventory on their own as non-guaranteed impressions. The rate can be somewhere between what they get from national remnant networks and what they get from guaranteed impressions on the rate card. The client then pays a variable amount each month based on the number of impressions delivered.Homepage TakeoversThe 2021 online rate card for The Economist magazine has an example of a unique ad placement tactic: the homepage takeover.A homepage takover in this case (and many others) will give an advertiser 100 percent share of voice for the homepage for a single day. That means any and all advertising space on the homepage goes to one client.Rates are set according to each regional homepage of the publication. 2025-03-31Where one, or more, of the favicon references are to files that don’t meet the requirements and Google just displayed the generic globe favicon instead in the SERPs. So just make sure to double-check all of the references to your favicon from your homepage and make sure they are ok.For example, this site’s favicon wasn’t showing up correctly. It ended up the homepage had multiple rel=“icon” references and one didn’t meet Google’s guidelines. Fixing that by just having one rel=”icon” reference pointing at the proper file enabled the site to regain its favicon in the SERPs:4. Location of the favicon image file:Update: February 24, 2023: I reached out to Google after seeing favicons show up in the search results even when the favicon file was hosted on another domain. That’s not supposed to work, so I was interested in hearing from Google about that. I ended up hearing back from Google after they looked into it, and you do NOT have to host the favicon file on the same domain as the homepage. This is great to know, and it’s one less thing to worry about if your favicon isn’t showing up in the search results. Here is what the documentation used to say:And here is what Google explained in its ‘latest documentation updates’ page:5. Uh, empty favicon code…Yes this seems obvious, but I’ve unfortunately seen it in action. If you literally leave out the file in the favicon code, then you will obviously have favicon problems in Search. :) So if you are experiencing favicon problems, then definitely double-check your code. And I also recommend using the various testing tools from Google to check both the static html and the rendered html to make sure your code is correct.6. Your platform or CMS is botched favicon-wise.For sites that use a specific platform or CMS to run their site, they may be in a situation where they can’t easily set or customize their favicon. And in situations where you don’t have much control, you are relying solely on the platform or CMS to get it right. And as you can guess, that doesn’t always work out well. And yes, that means all sites using that platform could have favicon problems. I surfaced this problem recently for a smaller e-commerce platform. Google just isn’t replacing the favicon with the generic globe, it’s literally leaving the favicon blank! This is even worse than receiving the generic favicon in my opinion…And when performing a query that brings up many sites using the platform, you can see the widespread problem. Yep, that’s all of the sites on the platform with missing favicons (not even the generic favicon). And look at the second listing in the
