The retired baseball star shocked the world last week with his lightened skin. It also raised issues of complexion and culture. Read Jesús Triviño Alarcón's commentary on why he is not surprised by the Dominican-born athlete's actions and why history and sociology may be repeating itself. Images Sidebar Sammy Sosa 40×40 Jpg Don’t blame Sammy Sosa. Blame Rafael Trujillo. The late Dominican dictator’s rule (1930-1961) left generations of his countrymen without families, hope, and a demonized view of Afro-Dominicans and Haitians. During his reign he ordered the execution of tens of thousands of Haitians (The Parsley Massacre) and opened the doors to Jewish refugees from Europe in hopes of adding more Caucasians to his mostly Afro-Latino isle. His self-hatred was ever clear when Trujillo powdered his skin to appear lighter. So, in retrospect, Sosa is simply carrying out the racist ideologies that have permeated Latin America for centuries.Afro-Latinos exist in large numbers in Latin American countries beyond the Caribbean, yet they remain disenfranchised. Colombia is home to 15 million Afro-Latinos yet its most popular stars are fair-skinned (Shakira and Juanes). The aspiration to appear more European is even prevalent in the world’s largest beauty pageant–Miss Universe. Even though 18 Latin American countries participated only one contestant appeared to have African ancestry (Miss Dominican Republic). Many Latinos are still under the Spanish Conquistador’s spell–white is better. Our grandparents and even some of our parents encourage us to marry to mejorar la raza (improve the race). (Over 100 plus) and food fights galore. Boston was off, and due to the weather and late start, alot of people didn’t stay for the whole set. Black Sabbath on the bill, plus Sammy Hagar and this band called Van Halen. Guess who killed it that day? The band that supposedly parachuted into the venue. (great gag) ““I stayed out side in line all night because it was general addmission in the morning, It was a really hot day and the bands all rocked. It was first time I heard of Van Halen and Sammy Hagar, I went mainly for Black Sabbath. Sammy opened the show. Then Van Halen came on I’m a Sammy and Van Halen fan every since.”“16 years old. Slept in the parking lot the night before with a frisbee for a pillow. I remember running into the stadium across the baseball field and out to the stage. Sammy Hagar got the crowd going. Van Halen was full of energy and was amazing, They made serious fans out of the people that saw them that day. Sabbath stole the show and was alone worth the time and money to be there. What a show. After they were done Boston was a let down. People were tired and they could not match the energy of Van Halen or Black Sabbath. All in all a great memory.”The full page ad from the Calendar section of the Los Angeles TimesDavid, Alex, Michael, Edward, and tour manager Noel Monk being escorted by police into the stadium for the show which proved to be one of their prize performances.Unfortunately, there are no known photographs of Van Halen’s set. But here’s a great live shot of Sammy’s set from this day that helps take you there.Thank to Doug Fox for writing most of this article, which appeared as the article “Go Ahead And JUMP!” from issue #14 of The Inside magazine. -->. JACKSONVILLE, Fla., — With an opportunity to impress on a national stage, No. 12 NC State baseball fumbled the bag in its first game of the Jax College Baseball Classic, suffering an 8-3 loss to Ohio State. In an afternoon of missed opportunities, the Wolfpack (3-2) failed to make the statement it wanted to. From sloppy fielding to stranding runners on base, NC State couldn’t get out of its own way. Ohio State (1-3) capitalized on the red-and-white’s mistakes en route to a dominant victory — the first for new Ohio State head coach Justin Haire.“It’s the beginning of the season, we’ve got a lot of new guys and they’re trying to figure out how to play the game,” said head coach Elliott Avent. “They better figure it out quick because the schedule we play you’re gonna have a lot of these games if you don’t figure it out.” Junior left-handed pitcher Dominic Fritton got the start and left plenty to be desired. After a strong first inning, Fritton’s control declined as he began to pile up walks. After 4.2 innings, Fritton recorded a career-worst six walks and was pulled. With an opportunity to show improvement on a national stage, Fritton instead turned in a concerning performance.“He doesn’t seem to get into a rhythm,” Avent said. “On the mound, he seems like he paces a little bit and never allows himself to get in rhythm. … He’s a competitor. He’s really good, but he’s pitching behind way too much.”While Fritton struggled, he wasn’t the only one responsible for surrendering eight runs. In the field, the Wolfpack looked indecisive and lost, making poor throws throughout the game. With the bases loaded in the second, sophomore third baseman Ryan Jaros made a critical error, tossing the baseball past sophomore catcher Alex Sosa. With
