Mario Olvera Acevedo, an event promoter specializing in Regional Mexican music, has died at the hands of unknown assailants in a direct attack that occurred in the early morning hours on Saturday (April 27).According to a statement issued by the Secretaría de Seguridad Ciudadana (or Secretariat of Public Safety) of the Government of San Pedro Cholula, Puebla, Mexico, police officers responded to the scene after receiving a report of gunshots.More from BillboardParamedics from the Municipal Civil Protection confirmed that Olvera, age 42, no longer had vital signs when he was found. They proceeded to cordon off the area while awaiting forensic experts from the State Attorney General’s Office.Initial investigations indicate that it was a “presumed direct attack.” According to the press release from Seguridad Ciudadana, after “a motorist hit the rear of the truck of the deceased to force him to get out and shoot him, at that moment a third person on a motorcycle arrived and both subjects fled in the direction of Periférico Ecológico, where they finally abandoned the vehicle.” The authorities are still looking for the perpetrators. The death of Olvera shocked the world of Regional Mexican music. For more than two decades, Olvera was a promoter of events in the states of Tlaxcala and Puebla with his company, Ranch Music Sinaloa, and countless artists and managers had working relationships and friendships with him.Over the weekend, misinformation circulating in several media outlets about Olvera’s relationship with big stars of the genre suggested he acted as their representative and was a direct part of their teams, neither of which is true.Last Wednesday (April 23), Olvera attended a meeting in Guadalajara, Mexico, of the ADEEM (Association of Entertainment Entrepreneurs in Mexico), of which he was once a member of the board of directors.Multiple artists took to social media to express their condolences, including Los Tucanes de Tijuana, El Flaco Elizalde and El Yaki. The latter artist said he was close to Olvera and considered him an older brother, though the two were not biologically related.“This is how I say goodbye to you my brother! Because I know you would have liked me to share it… and I do it from my heart,” wrote El Yaki on Instagram below a photo of the two together. “You taught me some really bitchin’ things and opened my eyes to something that today little by little I’m still building […] Fly high compa!”In Puebla, Olvera was also known for his activities in the restaurant business. Here we actually write lyrics. Not like Bugs Bunny,” the performer said, eliciting laughter from the audience while referring to Bad Bunny. In previous interviews, he had already pointed out that the urban genre lacks creativity and depth in its lyrics, although he acknowledged the Puerto Rican's success."Bad Bunny has reached places that no Latino has reached, and that is commendable, but that doesn’t mean I have to like him," she stated in an interview, dismissing any possibility of collaborating with the reggaeton artist.Although Bad Bunny has never openly commented on Fher's words, following the viral spread of a video of the Maná singer at one of his recent concerts, another urban artist has reacted to the criticism. It was the singer Ñejo who reminded everyone on Instagram that the group has a song with Nicky Jam. "I don't understand," he wrote beneath the post along with a snippet of the track where they share credits.Frequently Asked Questions about the Controversy between Fher Olvera and Bad BunnyWhy did Fher Olvera criticize Bad Bunny during a concert?Fher Olvera criticized Bad Bunny and reggaeton during a concert in Mexico, stating that their music lacks depth in lyrics and creativity. Maná Mexico Lindo y Querido Tour Toyota Center Houston March 30, 2023 Do you remember those Columbia House mail-order promos, the ones that would sell you 12 CDs for a dollar plus shipping. Yes, I am that old. One of the very first albums that I ordered through that service was 1992's "¿Dónde Jugarán Los Niños?" by Rock en Español band Maná. I would blast that CD on my Sony Discman as a teenager and feel so cool. Then in 1999, I saw them live in concert for the first time on The Supernatural Tour with Carlos Santana, and was completely blown away by the band. Their energy, their attitude, and the love for their home country left a lasting impression on this young Mexican kid. Fher Olvera rocked the stage with his energy and love for Mexico and Latin America. Photo by Jennifer Lake"> click to enlarge Fher Olvera rocked the stage with his energy and love for Mexico and Latin America. Photo by Jennifer Lake As the lights dimmed to signal the start of the Maná show, the evening began with "Could You Be Loved" by Bob Marley. It would be one of three tributes to the late, great reggae star throughout the night. The band then took to the stage with "Cómo Te Deseo," with several Aztec and Mayan symbols and other iconography showcased on the large video boards surrounding the stage. Lead singer Fher Olvera looked very rockero on stage, wearing a bright blue leather jacket and a bedazzled T-shirt with a calavera skull design. The set list transitioned into "De Pies A Cabeza" and "Corazon Espinado" with many in the audience singing word for word. High in the rafters of the arena, a large inflatable sea turtle was suspended over the crowd. Olvera took some time to explain the efforts of the band's Selva Negra foundation, which works hard to accomplish environmental protection and nature conservancy, including beach clean ups and sea turtle protection. The turtle was lowered from its perch as "Cuando Los Ángeles Lloran" played, and the video boards simulated the ocean environment of these animals. It was certainly a cool, beautiful portion of the show. Sergio Vallín plays a mean guitar for what many consider one of the best Rock En Español bands of all time. Photo by Jennifer Lake As I looked around the arena, I saw many people who were definitely "in their feelings", singing loudly, dancing wildly, and even shedding a tear or two during "Vivir Sin Aire" and the cover of Juan Gabriel's "Se Me Olvido Otra Vez". At the halfway point of the concert, Olvera took an extended break as the band ventured into several instrumental solos, first by guitarist Sergio Vallín, then bassist Juan Calleros, and ending with the master drummer Alex "El Animal" González.
