Robert Parker's Wine Vintage Chart - Wine Tech

Called the man with “The Million Dollar Nose” by The Atlantic Monthly, Robert Parker is one of the most influential wine critics in the world. Robert Parker worked as an Attorney in his hometown of Baltimore, Maryland before he discovered his interest in wine during a month-long trip to Alsace, France, in 1967. Driven by a desire to write about wine without industry conflicts of interest, he created the seminal bimonthly newsletter The Wine Advocate in 1978. By 1984, he was writing about wine full-time.Parker’s wine reviews first came to prominence when he called the 1982 Bordeaux vintage superb, an opinion that was far different from those of other critics. Parker is best known for his 100-point rating scale, which he developed because he believed that other critics’ scales were confusing and did not provide enough critical information. Parker’s Wine Advocate Rating System awards scores from 50 to 100 points based on characteristics like color, aroma, flavor, and overall quality level or potential for aging. Parker strongly urges wine buyers to read a wine’s tasting notes in addition to the numerical score, as the score alone will not reveal every important factor about a wine. You can read our guide on how Vivino's rating system compares to Parker's.The scale employs a 50-100 point quality scale ranging from unacceptable to extraordinary: 96-100 Extraordinary 90-95 Outstanding 80-89 Barely above average to very good 70-79 Average 60-69 Below average 50-59 UnacceptableFrom an initial 600 subscribers, The Wine Advocate has grown to a readership of 50,000 in more than 37 countries. Parker’s work has also appeared in Food and Wine Magazine, Forbes, and Businessweek, and he was the first non-Frenchman to serve as a wine critic for France’s L’Express magazine. Parker’s reviews and ratings, as well as his preference for ripe, higher-alcohol, oaky, highly extracted wines, have affected not just the cost of modern wines, but also their production methods in regions around the world. Parker has received numerous international honors including induction into France’s National Order of the Legion of Honour, the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic, and Spain’s Order of

By value has experienced consistent growth, surpassing 8% in 2018. Activity for Gaja has been less steady, peaking in 2014 to account for 12% of the total Italian trade, which then stood at 5%. As Italy gathered momentum in 2015 (to account for 7%), its increased trade by value was led by the more liquid Super Tuscans—Sassicaia, Masseto, Ornellaia—which affected Gaja’s share.Since 2017, however, Gaja’s share of Italy has been rising at a steady pace, from 4% to 7%. So far this year, its Sori San Lorenzo, Costa Russi, Sori Tildin and Sperss have been very active. When it comes to Gaja’s price performance, the Gaja Sori San Lorenzo index has risen the most since the end of 2017, up 5.6%. Gaja Barbaresco has also increased by 4.9%, while Sperss has remained flat. The broader Italy 100 index has risen 6.2% over the same period. The charts below compare the Market Prices of the last 10 physical vintages of Sori San Lorenzo and Sori Tildin to their respective Wine Advocate scores. Despite vintage and score variation, the wines command very similar prices, trading within the same range. This indicates that strong brand affinity and the power of Gaja the label as opposed to stylistic preference largely determine value. Christopher Farnsworth says it seemed like just another email from his agent. But then Farnsworth, the author of thrillers such as “The President’s Vampire” and “Killfile,” opened it, and everything changed. That email was offering him the possibility of taking over the Jesse Stone series created by the late Robert B. Parker.“It was nothing dramatic, not from the outside,” Farnsworth says by phone from his Los Angeles home. “But it was a big deal to me. My agent wrote me one day and said, ‘Hey, you’re a Robert Parker fan, right? They’re looking for a new guy for Jesse Stone – are you interested?’“I immediately emailed her back and said, ‘Yes, absolutely. What do I have to do?’ You know, ‘Do you need an organ? Do you need blood, kidneys, what?’”With “Robert B. Parker’s Buried Secrets,” author Chris Farnsworth takes over the Jesse Stone crime thriller series created by Parker who died in 2010. (Photography by Erin Moss)ExpandParker is a legend in modern crime fiction. He wrote 40 thrillers about the private detective Spenser over almost four decades, nine that featured the police chief Jesse Stone, six with the private investigator Sunny Randall, and three Westerns on the duo Virgil Cole and Everett Hitch.Since his death in 2010, all four series have continued with different authors such as Ace Atkins, Mike Lupica, Reed Farrel Coleman, and now Farnsworth breathing new life in the characters created by Parker. For readers, it’s a way to keep connected to the stories they love. For writers, it’s a chance to step into the worlds dreamed up by Parker, an icon for many crime writers.Even Parker knew the feeling: In 1989’s “Poodle Springs,” he channeled the persona of private eye Philip Marlowe for Raymond Chandler, who’d died 30 years earlier, taking the four chapters left by Chandler to complete the unfinished eighth Marlowe mystery.Farnsworth’s agent went back to the Parker estate to say he was interested, but as someone who’d discovered Spenser as a teenager, he says he couldn’t – and didn’t – wait.“I was so excited that I wrote the first chapter anyway,” he says. “I sent it to them, and apparently they liked it and thought it was good enough.”“Robert B.
