Chances are if you are reading this board game review, then you have heard of the classic game Risk. The “game of world domination” has been out since 1957. The is one of the classic strategy games that most gamers encounter early in their board game life. It has even been featured on the formerly popular show, Seinfeld.Since it’s introduction, Risk has spawned a few variant titles, such as Risk Godstorm and Risk 2210 A.D.. For this board game review, I’m going to be talking about the newest entry (and most unique) to the risk family, Risk Legacy.Game Overview:First, to get the basics out of the way. Risk is a fairly simple game. You start with some troops on the board, which is a map of the world broken out into different territories. Each turn, you are adding troops based on how many territories you controls. Then, you spend your turn attacking other player’s territories in hopes of expanding your control. Combat is handled by a simple dice rolling mechanic. That’s risk in a nutshell. In my opinion, it’s the easiest and most basic of strategy games.So what is Risk: Legacy. Well, I’d have to say it’s unlink any game I’ve ever played. When you play this game, you are truly making it your own. You will be doing things like opening secret packets through out the game, tearing up cards (indeed, you are destroying parts of your game), putting stickers on and writing on the game board.The concept is so unique to board games, that I had to try this out for myself. I must say, it was a bit of a struggle to actually tear up a card for my board game (I usually keep them in pristine condition). But after 4 games of risk legacy, I was hooked!How to Play:I described a bit earlier how to play “vanilla risk”. And for the most part, the game is the same. Combat works the same, so does territory control and movement. However, there are some important differences in Risk: LegacyWhen you start your first game, each player chooses one of five different factions. You get to choose a power for your faction (they are all different). After you make your choice, you stick it on to the faction card (it’s a sticker). The other power? You tear that up and throw it away. never to be used.Second, the game is not played until someone dominates the whole world. Well it can be, but it rarely reaches that level. The easiest way to win is to acquire 4 starts. You get starts by either controlling other players starting HQs or turning in territory cards. You also get a start if you’ve never won the game. That is actually tracked by a spot on the game board. If you win a game, you get to sign the board and gloat over your opponents.And that plays into the heart of Risk: Legacy. The game is truly meant to be played by the

It’s in your best interest not to leave them alone in any one area. #2 Accept That It’s A Lot Of LuckMore than any other mode of RISK (which has small elements of luck), 1v1 RISK is largely based on luck. If you go first, you have a massive advantage. You’ll break any bonuses and set yourself in a good position for the rest of the game. Even beyond this, the dice rolls may lean in your favor or the other person’s at key moments. One bad roll is enough to lose it in 2-player RISK. #3 Capture As Many Territories As PossibleThe name of the game is to gain as many troops for each reinforcement as possible. With these large militaries, it’s a race to see who can use it to conquer the other members of the world. You can achieve these domination victories in two ways. The traditional means of besieging, or nuking your enemies into oblivion until you can take them over. Alternatively, you can go the route of forming alliances with as many powerful nations as you can before the game is finished.-Source The Saxy GamerWhile you don’t need to be a warmonger to win militarily, domination victories lend themselves well to this idea. You can almost constantly find yourself policing petty squabbles around the world. You’ll also find yourself bullying your enemies into a position where they are in line with your ideologies. In this way you can force others into a state of friendship or alliance; threatening to oust those who stand against you. Tips to RememberA good thing to note when it comes to these types of victories is that it’s better to do them early on as opposed to later. Early on, walled cities and besiegement can be toppled very easily. After a prolonged period of time and the threat of war, nations will naturally build up their defenses which makes them almost impossible to deal with. In this regard, you’re also better off focusing on a variety of troops rather than a single unit type.Lastly, you’ll always want to make sure that you keep your own cities well-defended as much as possible. It’s good to leave troops garrisoned in your cities and focus some of your forces on offensive missions. In this way,
