In 1961 Whitney Ellsworth, editor of the National Periodical Publications (now DC Comics) that made several scripts for 'The Adventures of Superman', tried to capitalize on the success of the series with a new t.v. show entitled 'The Adventures of Superboy'. Unfortunately, of the 13 episodes that were written for television, only the pilot was filmed and not even it was released on television. The pilot starred 23 year old John Rockwell as Superboy/Clark Kent with 21 year old actress Bunny Henning as Lana Lang. Other actresses in the pilot included Trudy Ellison, Marla Ryan and Mary Ann Roberts.Entitled 'Raja's Ransom', the pilot had almost the same plot as an adventure published in SUPERBOY NO.88 in April 1961 called 'The Saddest Boy of Smallville'. One day in the Smallville's College where Lana Lang and Clark Kent are studying, the teacher asks the pupils to speak about his/her fathers. A character named Jimmie (Tommy in the comic) is very short in his speaking and is very sad because his father is the porter of a local theatre. In this theatre there is an exhibition of jewels called 'Raja's Ransom' that some gangsters are planning to steal. While one ganster distracts Superboy, the other two committ the robbery. However, Jimmie's father sees them and, being a very good artist, draws a picture of the gangsters for the police. With the aid of the drawing and Superboy's help, the gangsters are arrested. The following day, the teacher asks Jimmie to speak about his father. This time he is very proud because thanks to his father, the police could arrest the gansters.Even though the series never made it to television, Superman fans can still see the long lost pilot on Youtube. Included on the video are the pilot episodes of 'Superboy' and another failed series called 'Superpup'; a Superman parody with short people disguised like animals. There are also four interviews by Whitney Ellsworth to cast an actress for the roll of Lana Lang.In addition to the video, a book on the series is also available. Written by Chuck Harter, 'Superboy and Superpup: The Lost Pilots' contains the scripts of the first 13 episodes of 'Superboy' including dialogs and many pictures from the pilot. Also included are sections dedicated to the failed 'Superpup' series and Whitney Ellsworth, interviewing his family.. Lego Superboy - Connect the Dots for Kids. Superman warns Lex it's only a matter of time before more ghost from his past come back to haunt him for the past aggression he inflicted upon them, Lex doesn't appreciate Superman lecturing him about his safety or rescuing him. Despite this Superman still offers to help him if needed, Lex believes the only reason he'd offer his assistance is related to the public opinion of how they'd preserve him if he failed, but Superman corrects him and state he's not their to discriminate when it comes to saving lives innocent or not, he does it because it's the right thing to do. Superman leaves Luthor to find his way back to Metropolis. Superman confront Lex at LexCorp. Many nights later, Lex heads towards his office only to find that the lights aren't working. What speed feats?7 years ago @theonewhoknows said: Even "in character", Krypto was doing things like heat vision frying poor defenseless cats, and super speed flying and biting the Superman level foe Mongul into submission."In character", and certainly when blood lusted, Krypto the Kryptonian dog heat visions, and/or rips Black Bolt apart faster than the Inhuman can even gasp, or register it happened. Then gets a stern talking to by Superman, and is forced to take a time out in the Fortress Of Solitude.Based on what speed feats?Krypto can keep up with Superboy and Kid Flash while they're moving at superspeed.7 years ago @willpayton said:@revan2424 said: @theonewhoknows said: Even "in character", Krypto was doing things like heat vision frying poor defenseless cats, and super speed flying and biting the Superman level foe Mongul into submission."In character", and certainly when blood lusted, Krypto the Kryptonian dog heat visions, and/or rips Black Bolt apart faster than the Inhuman can even gasp, or register it happened. Then gets a stern talking to by Superman, and is forced to take a time out in the Fortress Of Solitude.Based on what speed feats?Krypto can keep up with Superboy and Kid Flash while they're moving at superspeed.Revan2424, Willpayton gave an appropriate example before I saw these tags. To expand on that feat, I will add that Krypto beat Superboy and Kid Flash in an official race returning an item back to Superman literally instantly that kind of speed to the fact that the dog's bites are lethal enough to tear through durable beings such as Eradicator, Atlas, Mongul, and even Superboy Prime, the only conclusion that can be arrived at is-when Black Bolt faces the Dog From Krypton:Krypto wins.Good to see that the number of users who state Krypto wins-rightfully so-has drastically increased.7 years ago @theonewhoknows: Nice travel speed. Got any combat speed feats? Because Black Bolt is able to trade blows with people like Gladiator. I still don't see Krypto being anything but dog paste on the ground.7 years ago Krypto! BB is overated!7 years ago Krypto blitzes and bites his throat out in both rounds7 years ago @revan2424: Are you aware of what a White Martian is? Super strong, super durable counter parts to J'onn J'onzz (a.k.a. Martian Manhunter) capable of trading blows with the likes of Superman, J'onn, and Wonder Woman, and who have fast combat and travel speed of their own (even giving Wally West Flash a workout in that area)?Krypto is able to face multiple White Martians simultaneously combat, not travel speed) and hurt them with his heat vision (meaning, if it can sear them, it'll tear through Black Bolt like a laser through tissue paper).Yet another weapon in the tool box that Superman's pet has to take out the "talkative" one.Not to mention, the dog doesn't need combat speed, really---his range weapons can smite bolt before he can react, or the Kryptonian canine can "travel" to the Inhuman and bite his head off before he can even sigh. There's just no escaping it. Pilot film about a young man with super powers.Just watched this on Youtube (with a very faded print) and loved it. The 60s produced some knockout family friendly TV shows (Adam West Batman, Star Trek, the Irwin Allen shows, QM's The Invaders, etc) so we can only wonder what would have happened if this graduated into a series.I wonder why this never happened? I was expecting a bit more action from the pilot, however we got a fast moving car crashing into Superboy which was well done. Maybe the network in question thought it seemed a bit too talky? I personally was not bothered by it being very talky, but maybe others had concerns? They fixed the costume issue! A less talked about problem with Adventures Of Superman (1952-58) was the way his Superman short pants were too high (almost right up to his belly button) in the colour seasons. Granted, this would not have been an issue if it only happened for a few weeks but when he looked like that for half the series - I call that an issue! They fixed the problem with Superboy.Too bad we only have one single adventure to enjoy however if you want more of this sort of kid-friendly retro superhero stuff I would consider watching all 28 episodes of the live-action - Shazam! (1974) series - as The Adventures Of Superboy does indeed resemble Shazam!. Enjoy.
