SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) - Emergency cold weather shelters could open next week. For Tim Michaels and Vicki McCombs, having access to cold weather shelters is more than a bed and a meal; it is often the difference between life and death.“There’s people out here every year that ended up freezing to death,” said Michaels. “They’re lifesaving,” said McCombs.Michaels has spent years navigating the brutal winters, often with no shelter to turn to. At one point, his struggle to survive in the cold became a matter of survival.“When I had my dog, there were no police shelters for dogs,” said Michaels. “I could not take my dog with me, so I stayed out here with my dog. I did wonder if I am going to have to go to the hospital, to the emergency room, before my feet freeze.”For many, these shelters offer more than just a place to sleep but also a sense of safety.”The times I’ve been out here, it’s been frightening. It’s been so scary, especially being a woman out here. It’s dangerous. It’s if you’re on the streets, you got to sleep with one eye open because you don’t know what’s going to happen,” McCombs explained.Right now, leaders with Community Partnership of the Ozarks say they have enough volunteers to open shelters if needed, but this could change as the winter cold begins to seep in.“Each and every single year, it seems like we need more and more of those,” said Emily Fessler with the Community Partnership of the Ozarks. “Last year, it took an average of 39 volunteers per night to even open the shelters... things come up. People get sick. You know, life events occur, and so always having volunteers on standby is so important.“City Utilities will offer free transportation to cold-weather shelters. Pickup will be at the Veterans Coming Home Center at 6 a.m. and from shelter sites at 6 a.m.CLICK HERE for a list of cold weather shelters around Springfield. To report a correction or typo, please email [email protected]. The Desert Southwest by the time we get to Thursday. While that system should give us our best chance for additional scattered showers and thunderstorms by next Thursday and Friday, it may keep some scattered showers in the forecast by next Saturday before it moves on.Another system with rain & storms Thursday & Friday(KY3)Scattered rain could linger into next Saturday(KY3)Rain or shine, temperatures look to stay mild through the week ahead. After lows in the lower to middle 50s Sunday morning, a northwest wind won’t stop us from warming up. Highs on Sunday should push into the lower to middle 60s for the Missouri Ozarks and into the upper 60s in northern Arkansas.Highs back in the 60s for many Sunday afternoon(KY3)While temperatures on Monday morning look cold with numbers in the upper 30s to lower 40s, we should see highs easily climb back between the middle 60s and lower 70s for Monday afternoon.Middle 60s to highs near 70° for Monday(KY3)That mild trend will continue through the rest of the week.Rain or shine, numbers stay mild through the week ahead(KY3)Under partly to mostly sunny skies Tuesday and Wednesday, that will keep highs in the upper 60s to lower 70s. Even with those possible rain and thunderstorm chances from next Thursday through next Saturday, we should stay mild with highs in the lower 70s. Unless we see big changes beyond this forecast, we could see thunderstorm chances in place for Sunday the 29th and on that Tuesday the 31st to wrap up the month of March.Copyright 2025 KY3. An amazing stretch of springtime warmth begins today, with many places hitting 80° for the first time. Many areas should top 80° under sunny skies.(KY3)The atmosphere remains quite dry overall, so once again we will see full sunshine. Surface dew points look to rise into the 40s, putting us just outside the threshold of a red flag warning. Still, I would recommend against burning. An upper low will approach the area late Wednesday, bringing with it some moisture and instability aloft. This could mean a few showers or storms Wednesday night, primarily over Arkansas and far southern Missouri. The first of two upper lows will move across Arkansas Wednesday night, and a few storms are expected.(KY3)A little bit of small hail can’t be ruled out, but no severe weather is expected this far north. Temperatures should remain in the upper 70s Wednesday and Thursday, and we may reach 80 again on Friday. The outlook for Friday remains unchanged at this point, with surface moisture and instability expected to be marginal for any thunderstorms over the western half of the Ozarks. This will likely shift the main severe weather threat east of Highway 65.(KY3)Scattered storms will likely erupt east of Highway 65, in my opinion, and severe weather certainly looks possible. The best chance of storms will be east of Highway 65.(KY3)The eastern Ozarks will have the highest chance of severe storms.(KY3)However, this could be a dry system for many of us. Friday will be a very windy day, with some. Good Saturday evening, everyone. Even though we stayed quiet today, our cloud cover this evening should give way to increasing chances for scattered showers and thunderstorms for late tonight. In fact, we have parts of the Ozarks under a level 1 to level 2 risk for storms to be strong to severe with large hail and some isolated high wind gusts possible.Level 1 to 2 risk for some strong to severe t-storms tonight(KY3)This is all due to a couple of storm systems passing nearby and through the region tonight into Sunday. Even though we are dry at the surface, we are expecting an increase in moisture and wind above the surface to help fuel our thunderstorm chances later.Watching a system pass to our south tonight and an incoming cold front early Sunday(KY3)Once we get to about 9:00 to 10:00 this evening, storms will initially develop to the west of 65. As they continue to strengthen, they will work across mainly the Missouri Ozarks and push into our eastern counties by about midnight to 1:00 early Sunday morning.Storms get going between 9 and 10 o'clock tonight(KY3)Initial storms clearing the eastern Ozarks by 1 AM Sunday(KY3)That initial batch is where we may get a chance to see some strong to severe storms. After that clears out, our cold front to the northwest will come through Sunday morning keeping mostly cloudy skies and some scattered showers and a few storms in the forecast. Once we get past Sunday morning, though, we will see partly to mostly sunny skies return for the rest of the day. Depending on where the storms pass through, rain amounts could range between 1/10 of an inch to about an inch at most. Some scattered rain and t-storms in place by sunrise Sunday AM(KY3)Additional scattered showers & few t-storms for Sunday morning(KY3)Even after this system clears, we will continue to see gusty winds and humidity values stay a little too dry for our liking. That means we will keep an elevated fire risk in the forecast from Sunday through Tuesday of next week. Then, we should see that fire threat drop off as we head into the middle of next week.Gusty winds off and on from Sunday into next week(KY3)Fire risk stays elevated through early next week(KY3)I say that because even though we will be under an upper-level ridge, a storm system should undercut it and come at us from

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) - An Ozarks man is making history in cowboy action shooting, winning his seventh world championship.Dylan Holsey has been competing in cowboy action shooting since he was five, but his passion comes from a deep respect for gun safety. He won his first world championship in cowboy action shooting at just 16 years old.The Stone County man went on to break his own world record at 19, but he says all the wins didn’t come without a lot of practice.“You’ve got to be on the range shooting at least every day,” said Holsey. He says it’s not just about learning how to shoot. It’s about practicing safety, too.“The sport is based around firearm safety, so that’s something I’m very passionate about and keeping guns in the hands of responsible firearms,” Holsey explained. This weekend, he competed in the World Championship of Cowboy Action Shooting in Phoenix, Arizona. Shooters use multiple guns in this competition and compete head-to-head in timed stages. He returned to the Ozarks with his seventh world championship title.“That’s about 24 rounds out of four different guns with a fair amount of movement,” he explained.Holsey’s journey hasn’t always been easy. Last year, his dad, the one who got him into the sport, suffered a stroke. He decided to stay home to take care of him, missing out on the 2024 world championship. “Having that taken away from me last year, the opportunity to come back this year, getting it done, there’s no feeling like it in the. SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) - People often think of donations when they think of food banks. While those are great and always appreciated, one thing that Ozarks Food Harvest needs is volunteers.“We’re putting that call out there to remind everyone that hunger is a problem year-round. So we still need your help to get this food through our distribution center and out into southwest Missouri where we are helping to feed our neighbors,” said Sarah Byrd, volunteer program director with Ozarks Food Harvest.Volunteers can be of any age and come alone or as a group. They want to fill their weekday afternoon slots, which are primarily three hours long. Therefore, you will be on your feet and do some light lifting.“We have our sort and repack sessions, so that’s sorting our retail donations that come into the distribution center. Those come from grocers or local food producers. So that’s items like dry shelf-stable products, fridge products, frozen products, and they’re sorting that food for quality and food safety and then repacking it for general food distribution. Then we have what we call our build projects, which are for our weekend backpack program and our senior boxes, and that’s an assembly-line style project where volunteers are packing food that will then go out to either those children in need or seniors in the area,” said Byrd.Ozarks Food Harvest is experiencing increased need after the holiday season, so it really relies on volunteers to help pack a hundred thousand pounds of food each week. It needs about 40 volunteers a day.“If we didn’t have these volunteers, we would have to hire 15 to 18 more full-time staff members to keep up with distribution. So we absolutely need them, and we’re happy to accommodate them in any way that we can,” said Byrd. Not only does volunteering benefit the community, but it can also benefit the volunteers.“Not only is it a tangible way that they can give back to their community, but it benefits them as well. Countless mental health and general health benefits to people who are volunteering. There’s a social aspect, which a lot of us miss out on this time of year as well, so it gets them out of the house, interacting with others, and giving back to the community, which is just a really great way to improve our community across the board,” said Byrd.If you’re interested in volunteering, you
