Is your partner Adam able to join you on any of the tour dates?When we finish with our tour in Asia, we will be basing ourselves in New York for a few of the concerts that are in the surrounding states, so I will get to see him then and he will join me for some of the shows in Florida toward the end of the Christmas tour. We will be so far away for most of this tour overseas, and Adam has a super busy fall. He is a very accomplished pianist and works as the artistic director of the opera program at Juilliard and will be playing a show at the Metropolitan Opera on top of concerts that he will be playing this fall. So, he is very busy these next few months as well.As Il Divo’s openly gay member, do you feel like a sort of ambassador to the community?When I was growing up, I was taught by society that being gay was the absolute worst curse that could befall any individual. So, I was scared and ashamed and I wished and wished that it wasn’t me. Years later, when I was coming out, a friend of mine who was gay told me that he used to feel that way too, but as he got older, he realized that being gay was a huge blessing from the universe. That completely changed my perspective and I think about that every day. Those experiences have made me into a resilient person who is able to step into who I really am in a very public way and not allow criticism of any kind to break my spirit. I still get hate for being gay regularly. But, every time I do, there is an army of loving and accepting people that jump to my defense, and that is a beautiful thing to see. There are people out there who show me so much love for what I do with Il Divo, for my singing and it also happens that I’m gay. And I think that now being a part of so many people’s lives as an artist that maybe haven’t had so much exposure to gay people, and them witnessing the love that I have for my partner and the camaraderie that I have with my bandmates is impactful. In the end, we as humans are a lot more similar than we are different, we are just experiencing the world through different lenses. Do you have a sense that the other members of Il Divo have an awareness of the group’s LGBTQ+ following?I have definitely seen people from the LGBTQ+ community at concerts. From my opera career, I know that classical music has a large gay following. And Il Divo is a mix of classical singing with Whitney Houston and Celine Dion songs. A lot has changed over the course of their classical-adjacent career, but the group’s core values have not once wavered – that is the most notable (and noble) aspect of Il Divo – XX: 20th Anniversary Album. It is the arrangements on this album that stand out – these four multi-lingual powerhouses are not only intertwined vocally, but their vocals are layered intricately within the instrumentation. Even with this being the first album with a new member, nothing feels out of place. One must praise the musicians themselves, but just as much as that production team blending the sounds at hand. As soon as this hit shelves, streaming services, and the airwaves last week, people were picking up on the harmonious nuances that Il Divo and Co. crafted for this special anniversary release. From “Perfect” to “No Tengo Nada,” not a note from anyone or anything is out of place. There was no lapse in judgement nor time, even after 20 years and the loss of a core member: the theatrical, operatic troubadour that was Carlos Marín. Coming in at just under 43 minutes long, this LP feels stable and even. It’s not too long like some of their first records were, and it is also not so short that you pull your favorite songs from the tracklist, add them to a playlist, and move on. This is a full listening experience, well-rounded and steady in the 10 songs that (as always) touch on a wide variety of sound and style. As a whole, XX is romantic, emotionally-charged, cohesive, elegant, multi-lingual classical music that feels as effortless as it does thoughtful. The attention to detail in everything from the songs at hand to the order they play is evident. It warms our hearts to know that this electric retrospective of a record was as cared about on the inside as it is on the outside by fans and critics alike so far. PH: Mario SchmolkaThey are the most recognizable band in classical crossover music, with over thirty million albums sold, hit songs, tours, collaborations with industry legends, and a truly international fanbase. But as Il Divo celebrates their 20th anniversary, Urs Bühler shared that they are not dwelling on the past but instead focusing on the present and future: “We’re not looking back [at] what have we done for the last 10 years? But looking at what we are doing now… And where could we go in another 20 years.”Their latest album, XX, and the accompanying tour that spans across the United States, South America, England, and more, present a new opportunity for the group to evolve and move forward. When speaking of his bandmate and producer/arranger Sébastien Izambard, Urs told us, “He’s really into making Il Divo kind of more 2024… I’m happy and excited about every crazy idea that Sebastian brings to the table. And even if we have to discard 95 of 100 ideas he has–” the group laughs– “it keeps us moving and makes us excited about the music we’re doing.”Some of Sébastien’s ideas included reimagining Gnarls Barkley’s “Crazy” or insisting the group include “Despertar Sin Ti,” their first original on the album. However, it’s very much a group effort, as David Miller states, “It’s a very democratic situation. Everybody is given an equal voice.
