Paramount Pictures Last night, HBO aired The Godfather Epic, a 424-minute long version of The Godfather and The Godfather Part II that re-edits both films into chronological order and features footage that isn't in the theatrical cut of either film. It will air again on January 23, but it's currently available to stream on HBO Go and HBO Now.But here's the thing: you probably shouldn't watch this version, especially if it's your first exposure to these movies. This cut is a fascinating curiosity for devoted fans, but it's also the worst possible way to experience two of the greatest movies ever made.As you probably know, Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather series tells the story of the Corleone crime family over the course of several decades. The first film takes place from 1945 through 1955 and chronicles the final days of Don Vito Corleone (Marlon Brando) as he slowly hands the reins of his organization over to his son, Michael (Al Pacino). Part two acts as both a sequel and prequel, following Michael's rise to power (and his descent as a human being) while we flash back to the early days of young Vito (Robert De Niro) in 1917.The Godfather Epic blends both movies into one seven-and-a-half-hour marathon, presenting those 1917 scenes first and concluding in late '50s. Thankfully, The Godfather Part III is nowhere to be found. Both films are padded out with deleted scenes, which the real draw here. Here is HBO's trailer for this presentation:Although the "Epic" title is new, this is not the first time these movies have been presented like this. In 1977, NBC aired The Godfather Saga, a chronological cut of both films presented over four consecutive nights. Coppola signed off on this cut, as the resulting profits from airing these movies as a television event allowed him to keep production on Apocalypse Now alive. A slightly shorter version of The Godfather Saga was released on home video in 1981 and the whole thing aired on TV on AMC in 2012. And here it is again: on HBO and retitled The Godfather Epic.If you've seen these movies before, The Godfather Epic is an interesting curiosity. The unseen footage (none of it vital) is fascinating and watching De Niro's scenes play out prior to meeting Brando's older version of Vito Corleone changes the color of the first film in a significant way. However, this cut does significant damage to these movies as pieces art. Stripped of its flashbacks, The Godfather Part II loses the direct and powerful contrasts between father and son. By seeing his past play out first, Vito isn't half as enigmatic or as fascinating during the events of the first film. Separately, these are. The Godfather: Five Families. 785 likes. Paramount Pictures The only daughter of Vito Corleone, the timid Connie Corleone plays a vital part in The Godfather with her wedding the first main set piece of the film. Later her abuse at the hands of her husband Carlo sets off a chain of events that would lead to one of the most notorious death scenes in movie history. Talia Shire made her mark as an Oscar-nominated actress during the 1970s with her roles as Connie in The Godfather and as Adrian in the Rocky series. Shire is also a part of the Coppola family tree as the sister of The Godfather director Francis Ford Coppola, mother of Jason Schwartzman, and aunt to Nicolas Cage. Gianni Russo as Carlo Rizzi Image via Paramount Pictures The first appearance of Carlo Rizzi is one of celebration during his lavish Sicilian wedding to Connie Corleone. It does not take long for that sheen to disappear when we witness Carlo’s brutality towards Connie during unflinching scenes of domestic violence, which results in hot-headed Sonny Corleone laying down an epic beating on Carlo in the streets of New York City. Gianni Russo’s reputation as an on-screen tough man is one that is matched by his exploits off the screen, which included known associations with infamous mafia figures. Al Lettieri as Virgil “The Turk” Sollozzo Image via Paramount Pictures A heroin kingpin looking to gain the backing of New York’s five mafia families, Virgil “The Turk” Sollozzo finds a roadblock in the form of Vito Corleone, who views the drug trade as bad for business. When Sollozzo attempts to have Vito assassinated, it begins a chain of events that sees Michael Corleone taking the reins and placing Sollozzo in his crosshairs. An Italian American actor whose best-known role is playing Sollozzo in The Godfather, Al Lettieri also made a mark as menacing villainous characters in The Getaway and Mr. Majestyk before his unfortunate death in 1975.

Based on Oscar-winning producer Albert S. Ruddy’s memories of making The Godfather, Paramount+’s The Offer tells the story of the mob threatening the classic 1972 film adaptation’s production. One scene in the 10-episode limited series, for example, shows former Paramount boss Robert Evans (Matthew Goode) finding a dead rat in his New York hotel room bed — a clear warning from Mafia members, apparently angered by a potentially negative big screen depiction of Italian Americans. In fact, The Godfather author Mario Puzo reportedly never used the word “Mafia” in his novels in order to head-off complaints from the Colombo crime family. The Offer allows Ruddy, who’s played by Miles Teller and serves as an executive producer, to tell his side of the story. To put his recollections on paper, series creator and writer Michael Tolkin spent five days interviewing Ruddy. “What sealed it for me was when Al said, ‘Every day of making The Godfather was the worst day in my life,’ and that told me we had a show,” Tolkin explained to Vanity Fair in January. “For every character in the film, getting it made or stopping it from being made was at the core of their actions, and it was a matter of life and death to them. So that’s not a gangster story, that’s a human story. That’s what gave the book and the movie so much power. Everyone is fighting for their existence.”The Offer Draws From Ruddy’s MemoriesViewers will also recognize plenty more real-life figures, including Marlon Brando (Justin Chambers), Frank Sinatra (Frank John Hughes), Al Pacino (Anthony Ippolito), director Francis Ford Coppola (Dan Fogler), talent manager Bettye McCartt (Juno Temple), crime boss Joe Colombo (Giovanni Ribisi), and studio owner Charles Bluhdorn (Burn Gorman). However, not everyone depicted in the Paramout+ series shares Ruddy’s memories.“That’s the point of view of, I guess, the producer,” Coppola, who was not involved with The Offer, told Variety in March. “But it doesn’t really reflect what really happened, in my opinion.”Meanwhile, Deadline editor-at-large Peter Bart, a former Paramount production vice president under Evans in the 1970s, offered more specific criticisms of The Offer’s accuracy. “They are vivid anecdotes, but they are at odds with the accounts of principals who made the movie — of which I am one — and who encountered a different reality,” Bart, who’s played by Josh Zuckerman in the series, recently wrote. He added that his recollections of filming The Godfather were “fully consistent” with those of Coppola, Evans, key production supervisor Gray Frederickson, and “casting guru” Fred Roos, among others — though Paramount+ reportedly had “zero consultation” with these individuals. The Mafia Threat In The Offer May Be InflatedIn his Deadline article, Bart quoted former The New

Francis Ford Coppola managed to turn a somewhat trashy novel by Mario Puzo and turn it into a new American epic about the dynamics within a family; although mobsters in film were generally depicted as being faceless monsters, The Godfather presented a really empathic story revolving around Michael Corleone (Al Pacino) as he struggled to decide if he wanted to live up to the legacy of his father, Vito (Marlon Brando). Crime cinema as it exists today would not have been possible without the inspiration of The Godfather and its sequel, The Godfather: Part II; without Coppola’s two defining masterpieces, films like Goodfellas, Pulp Fiction, The Usual Suspects, The Departed, The Untouchables, and Uncut Gems simply would not exist. Quotes like “I’m going to make him an offer he can’t refuse” are now iconic. From the day Nicole Clemens took the reins of Paramount Television Studios in 2018, she fielded calls about whether “The Godfather” was available for development as a TV series. The answer was always no. “The Godfather” — Francis Ford Coppola’s 1972 masterpiece that begat 1974’s “The Godfather: Part II” and 1990’s “The Godfather: Part III” — is among the most valuable assets in the Paramount Pictures vault.Clemens couldn’t help thinking about all of those inquiries a year later when she took a general meeting with nonagenarian producer Albert S. Ruddy, whose quirky résumé ranges from “The Godfather” to “Hogan’s Heroes” to “Walker, Texas Ranger.” As he regaled her with tales of his transformation in the late 1960s from a computer programmer for Rand Corp. to Hollywood producer, she began to think that Ruddy’s story of breaking in as an outsider could be the POV for a series about the making of “The Godfather.” That concept became the 10-episode limited series “The Offer,” which bows April 28 on Paramount+.“I thought we had this moment to do an event series that would honor the ‘Godfather’ legacy but not walk into the challenge of continuing it,” Clemens says. “You don’t want to be the person that messes up ‘The Godfather.’” Popular on Variety Clemens enlisted novelist and screenwriter Michael Tolkin to the world of the series. He spent many hours with Ruddy and returned with what Clemens calls “a perfect pitch.” When he finished talking them through his vision for the ensembler that became “The Offer,” Clemens and Ruddy applauded.“You know it when you hear exactly what your best-case-scenario hope was,” she says.“The Offer” is full of actors playing real-life figures in the “Godfather” saga, including Coppola, then-Paramount chief Robert Evans and stars Marlon Brando and Al Pacino. Than to watch Michael Corleone's story and experience the magic of Coppola's work? It is, after all, so iconic that other movies reference its importance. Even 'Barbie' Had a Joke About 'The Godfather' Image via Warner Bros. Pictures One of the funniest moments of the Greta Gerwig film Barbie came when the Kens took over Barbieland and forced all the Barbies to listen to them because of the patriarchy. The joke comes when President Barbie (Issa Rae) remembers who she is and she is trying to distract the Kens to free another Barbie. She asks if they are watching The Godfather, and it ushers in the Kens mansplaining the franchise to her. While women do love The Godfather, the joke is more about how the film has taken on a new meaning in "film bro" circles, with many over-explaining its brilliance. Which all leads to the same point: These movies are just that good that everyone wants to talk about why they are so. So you can be like the Kens in Barbieland (or Kendom) and watch The Godfather now that the entire franchise is streaming on Pluto TV in October!
