I too had difficulties getting a handle on the Softube FET initially. It really does work differently than a VCA compressor. For me, the breakthroughs in getting a sound out of it that I liked were:1) Understanding that controlling the threshold consists of adjusting both the input and output knobs. Low input & high output = high threshold amount = compression kicks in less frequently, high input & low output = low threshold amount = compression kicks in more frequently.2) The parallel knob is pretty magical, allowing you to easily dial in how much to allow the compression to affect the signal level. Unless it's deliberate, I generally do not like compression to call attention to itself. With this knob, I can achieve that kind of transparency - compressed without sounding compressed - by blending more of the uncompressed signal in with the compressed signal.3) The low and high cutoff controls are great for narrowing the frequency range of the signal that will trip off the compression threshold. Got a signal where you want the compression to kick in only when the low frequencies get excessive? Set the high cutoff to a lower value (keeping the low cutoff knob turned all the way down), and the compression will kick in only when the lower frequencies get too loud. If the trouble with the signal is with excessive mid-ranginess that you want to dial back, turn the low cutoff up some and turn the high cutoff down some ... this will make the compression kick in only when the midrange gets too harsh.4) Because the Softube FET compressor is so aggressive, I find I get best results (meaning more transparent compression) using lower ratio values - typically in the range of 1.5:1 up to 4:1. Anything higher, and I find I have to turn the parallel knob more to the right (= more dry than wet) to keep the compression from calling too much attention to itself.5) As noted in this thread, the attack speed of the Softube FET is fast even when the knob is turned all the way to its slowest setting. I’ll offer some options premium and free for each type to use in your mixes.FET CompressorsWhat is a FET CompressorLet’s start with the FET or Field Effect Transistor compressor.FET compressors use transistors to reduce gain and add some lovely coloring to the compressed audio. In fact, a lot of producers use the plugin in their signal chain without applying any actual compression, just to get its warmth.The most famous example of a FET compressor is the 1967 Universal Audio 1176 which a lot of FET compressors mimic today.It offers a fairly straightforward interface in an input to set your threshold, a few preset ratio buttons, and attack and release knobs to set practically instant timings. There’s also an output knob as well as a dry/wet dial.When to Use a FET CompressorA FET compressor is great on guitars, drums, and vocals. In particular it works really well to tame peaks.As an example, I like to put one at the start of my signal chain on vocals with a ratio of 4:1 (the bottom button) to get roughly 5 db or so of gain reduction with a relatively fast attack and release time.
