Slot.DisplayClick to EnlargeThe Latitude 10's 10.1-inch 1366 x 768 IPS display offered sharp, colorful visuals that belies its underwhelming resolution. While watching a 1080p trailer for "Star Trek: Into Darkness," images of a young Captain Kirk were clear enough to see the wrinkles on his face as it twisted in surprise. A haunting scene of a burning cityscape and a crashing starship were equally crisp, even when viewed at a 40-degree angle. At 473 lux, the Latitude 10's display is plenty bright, easily outshining the category average of 365 lux. Neither the HP Envy x2, with its 306 lux, or the Iconia W510, and its 262 lux, were even close to the Latitude 10. The Surface Pro registered 394 lux.AudioClick to EnlargeThe Latitude 10's stereo speakers, located on its back panel, pumped out just enough sound to fill a small conference room. While listening to Macklemore and Ryan Lewis' "Thrift Shop," the speakers produced a clean sound, but lacked bass. Viewing a trailer for "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" on the Venue 8, we were able to see the minute details in Jennifer Lawrence's face and Philip Seymour Hoffman's expressions. From Elizabeth Banks' outlandish outfits to Jennifer Lawrence's blazing chariot, we were impressed with how brightly and boldly this panel rendered colors. The same trailer on the Tegra Note 7's 1280 x 800-pixel, 7-inch touch screen looked more yellowish than it did on the Dell Venue 8, which had more of a red tint to it. This was especially noticeable in an outdoor scene overlooking the city with the sunset in the background. Our main complaint was the Dell Venue 8's narrow viewing angles. Even when tilting the slate down slightly, the trailer became dim, and the display caught noticeable glare.Registering 359 lux on our light meter, the Venue 8 beat the 355-lux tablet category average and is on a par with the ASUS MeMO Pad HD 7 (358 lux). The Venue 8 is also significantly brighter than the smaller Dell Venue 7 (255 lux). However, the 451-lux Nvidia Tegra Note 7 is brighter.MORE: How to Root Android Phones and TabletsAudioThe Dell Venue 8's bottom-mounted speakers produced somewhat shallow audio. When blasting "Seven Days, Seven Nights," by The Fratellis, we noticed that the lead singer's voice and accompanying instruments sounded dull. The various melodies from the guitars, vocals, drums and bass seemed to blend together, without any clear definition or tone.We still much preferred this to the Tegra Note 7's dreary audio, which made the guitars, vocals and drums sound as if they were underwater.Although the Dell Venue 8's audio quality may not be the best, it was certainly loud enough to fill our small testing room. The slate registered at 81 decibels during the LAPTOP Audio Test, which is average for tablets.InterfaceClick to EnlargeThe Dell Venue 8 comes with a clean, barely skinned version of Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean -- in fact, it may be almost too clean. Unlocking the tablet brings you to the Venue 8's home screen, which is entirely blank, other than the Google Now search bar at the top and the row of app shortcuts on the bottom. We do wish the Venue 8 ran a more current version of the OS. While it supports wireless display, this tablet lacks such features as parental controls (found in 4.3) and saying "OK, Google" to launch voice search from the W4 is noticeably thinner and lighter than its predecessor. The Iconia W3 weighed in at a hefty 1.1 pounds and was 0.44 inches thick. The W4 is also more portable than the Toshiba Encore (15.3 ounces, 8.4 x 5.4 x 0.4 inches). However, the Lenovo Miix 2 (12.2 ounces, 8.5 x 5.2 x 0.3 inches) and Venue 8 Pro (13. 6 ounces, 8.5 x 5.11 x 0.35 inches) are both lighter and thinner.DisplayClick to EnlargeThe Iconia W4's direct-bonded 8-inch, 1280 x 800p IPS screen delivered stunning visuals. We enjoyed rich colors and crisp details during a 1080p trailer of "Captain America: The Winter Soldier." The orange and black flames from an exploding car were rich and deep, and details were so clear that we could make out blood and grime-covered wounds on Nick Fury's battered face. Viewing angles were ample; we experienced minimal distortion even when we tilted the tablet at extreme angles.Text and graphics also appeared crisp on websites such as Laptopmag.com and NYTimes.com. Words retained their sharp edges even as we zoomed in to extreme levels. The Iconia W4 registered 343 lux on our brightness meter, less than the tablet category average of 356 lux, the Venue 8 Pro's 360 lux and the Miix 2's stunning 534 lux. However, the W4 fared better than the 331-lux Encore.AudioThe Iconia W4's bottom-mounted stereo speakers produced mediocre sound. We listened to "Money Make Her Smile" by Bruno Mars and found Mars' voice unnaturally flat, while drums in the background sounded hollow. The music was barely loud enough to fill a small meeting room.On Laptop Mag's audio test, which involves playing a tone on the device and measuring it from 13 inches away, the Iconia W4 registered an underwhelming 78 dB. That's softer than the average tablet (80 dB), the Venue 8 Pro (88 dB) and the Encore (79 dB), but louder than the Miix 2 (72 dB).Interface and SoftwareClick to EnlargeRunning Windows 8.1, the Iconia W4 sports nifty updates from Microsoft that make the tablet easier to use. Remarkably, it’s the first new camera of this type since mid-2019. The success of Fujifilm’s X100 series suggests there must be an appetite for such a thing, but the question is whether Leica can persuade photographers to part with their money for what is, essentially, a 2018 model with a facelift. There’s still plenty to like about the D-Lux 8, though. Panasonic’s LX100 series was always a pleasure to shoot with, thanks to all those analogue controls, and Leica’s updated interface only improves that. The zoom lens provides a good level of compositional flexibility, and I really enjoyed the ability to change aspect ratios via a switch on the lens. It’s great to see an improved viewfinder, too, which fixes one of my biggest gripes with the LX100 II/D-Lux 7. I do wish the D-Lux 8 had a tilting screen, but that would have required a much more significant redesign and a larger body. What you don’t quite get here, though, is the fabulous out-of-camera colour rendition of the Fujifilm X100 series. Instead, the D-Lux 8’s DNG files need that little bit more workDevil's Brigade Lux for Mac - CNET Download
