In a move to combat the growing scourge of cheating in chess, World Chess (LSE: CHSS) is introducing voluntary polygraph testing as a significant new tool in its anti-cheating arsenal. This initiative, to be added immediately to the list of anti-cheating measures for chessarena.com, the World Chess official gaming platform, follows a high-profile polygraph test taken by former World Chess Champion Vladimir Kramnik. Background: The Catalyst for ChangeThe chess world has been fraught with cheating allegations, including $100 million lawsuits, and one of the most vocal critics of cheating has been Vladimir Kramnik himself. Known for his advocacy for fair play, Kramnik recently participated in and won the “Clash of Blames” against José Martínez Alcántara, a match that highlighted the importance of addressing cheating in both online and over-the-board chess. In a move to solidify his stance and offer an example in transparency, as well as address persistent rumors dating back to the 2006 World Championship match against Veselin Topalov—often referred to as "Toiletgate"—Kramnik voluntarily took a polygraph test. The test, administered with the facilitation of Pinkerton, the famous detective agency, by a former Scotland Yard Detective Superintendent, sought to address three critical questions:1. Did Kramnik communicate in any way designed to assist him in cheating during the 2006 World Chess Championship against Topalov? (Answer: NO)2. Has Kramnik cheated in any online chess games or tournaments since June 2019? (Answer: NO)3. Has Kramnik ever been offered a bribe to deliberately lose a chess match since becoming a top 10 player? (Answer: YES)The polygraph results were clear: Kramnik was found to be truthful on all accounts, with "No Deception Indicated." This outcome not only reaffirms Kramnik's integrity but also underscores the effectiveness of polygraph testing as a tool to verify the truth.A New Era in Chess: World Chess's InitiativeBuilding on the credibility of Kramnik's polygraph results, World Chess is taking the unprecedented step of offering polygraph testing as an additional voluntary measure to combat cheating. This initiative is designed to be a last-resort option for players facing cheating accusations, allowing them to clear their names through a rigorous and transparent process. To further enhance the integrity of the sport, World Chess is extending this opportunity to all top 100 players, who can voluntarily undergo the same polygraph test for free. The goal is to establish polygraph testing as a standard procedure within the chess community, similar to doping tests in other sports, thereby reinforcing trust and transparency at the highest levels of competition.Ilya Merenzon, CEO of World Chess, emphasized the importance of this initiative: "Cheating allegations have cast a shadow over chess for too long. By introducing voluntary polygraph testing, we are taking a decisive step to protect the integrity of our beloved sport. This initiative not only supports honest players but also strengthens the public's trust in chess as a fair game."World Chess will be working closely with FIDE and other major chess organizations and propose to integrate polygraph testing into their anti-cheating protocols, aiming to create a safer, fairer competitive environment forThe United States Chess Federation - Former Chess Life Editor

Former World Chess Championship Challenger Nigel Short has written his first book, Winning. The English Chess Federation selected Winning as one of four books under consideration for its 2021 “Book of the Year.” Although Winning did not win, it got a special mention. Like Nigel Short the chess commentator, Nigel Short the chess writer is educational and entertaining.Don’t Stop Me NowEach chapter of Short’s book is named after a song. Quality Chess provides a PDF excerpt from the chapter named after Queen’s Don’t Stop Me Now. Some of its lyrics are “I’m having such a good time. I’m having a ball. (Don’t stop me now).” That’s how I felt when I watched Nigel Short commentate for FIDE on the January 2020 Women’s World Chess Championship. Often, I would stay awake from 11:30 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. to watch live, even though FIDE also archives broadcasts on YouTube. In addition to explaining openings, strategy, tactics, and endgames, Short shared his views without hesitation. For example, he discussed his motion to ban smoking in all FIDE tournament areas, including break areas, and his thoughts on transgender competitors. He said he might become “Nigella” so he could play for the Women’s World Chess Championship, as alluded to in this Tweet. Was he making a joke? Maybe, and I felt compelled to keep watching so I wouldn’t miss any of the fun. It seemed like Short enjoyed commentating as much as I enjoyed watching him. He was, to quote Queen’s lyrics, “having a ball.”Openings andMagnus Carlsen - Former World Chess King

Online chess has boomed during the pandemic and so has cheating by players who sit in remote locations. The latest scandal was at the international body’s (FIDE) online university tournament where the winner, a former Ukrainian women’s champion, was disqualified and so were 19 others. So how deep is the rot in chess? What do statistics say?In August last year, chess.com put out statistics to show how accounts were closed, as cheating went up post the online chess boom. Before the start of the pandemic, the popular site for online play was banning about 6,000 players a month. In June 2020, the figure touched nearly 17,000. Titled players have also used illegal means. The website says accounts of 400 players with titles were closed, which included 46 Grandmasters. What are the common ways of cheating online?Using a chess engine, a computer programme, while playing online is one of the methods players use to cheat. FIDE president Arkady Dvorkovich has said ‘computer-assisted cheating is a real plague of contemporary chess’. Computer programmes, which power chess engines, and Apps can help a chess player play accurately and very quickly. Players can also get a prompt from those rated better than them on an electronic device, which is tough to detect as the game is being played over a screen. In over the board games, though cheating does occur, the fact that players sit face to face makes it much easier for an arbiter to detect any sort of hanky-panky.What are signs that someone isFormer Chess Champion Fischer Dead At 64
