After a decade of not using Google Analytics, we have finally caved. Google knows what everyone is doing anyway. The vast majority of websites now use Google Analytics, so we thought that a good post would be to show you how you can stop Google from tracking you… regardless of the websites you are looking at.Block Google (or any other Cookie tracker) from your PCWhilst sites like Majestic.com respect the “Do Not Track” option in browsers like Firefox, not all browsers let you set this option. I’ll edit this post if proved wrong, but according to this post, Chrome does not support Do Not Track. However, you can block tracking code at a much lower level on most computers. Doing so is a one-off change for you, and then you will have much more protection across the whole web if privacy is your thing. To do this, you amend your “hosts” file on Windows. This has to be done as an administrator. If you do not know how to get to your system files, have a look at this.WARNING! BACK UP THIS FILE (BELOW) BEFORE CHANGING, SO YOU CAN REVERT IF NEEDEDTo create a copy (in case) Go to the Run/Command box and type:1: Copy c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts_backup(Must be run as an Administrator)2: Go to the Run/Command box in windows and open the Hosts file. This is usually done by typing:“notepad c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts” (without quotes)(Must also be run as an Administrator)If you do this from a command screen, you are looking for something like this:You should then see something a bit like this:How to block GA on a PCThen at the bottom of this file enter127.0.0.1 the hostname you wish not to get any requestsSo to block Google Analytics, add:127.0.0.1 analytics.google.comTo block Doubleclick (Google’s remarketing cookie) add:127.0.0.1 doubleclick.netSave the file. The changes are immediate after saving. NOTE: If you see a “save as” window, you have not run this as an Administrator!Who else can I Block? Here is an (unverified) list of other trackers… this thread is WAY back from 2005, so maybe someone has a more up to date list for the comments?I have a Mac/IPhone/Android!No worries – there are many pages on the web that tell you how to do this on other operating systems. For example:Blocking on Macs is described hereYou cannot change this file on iPhones unless they are Jailbreaked, but some workarounds are discussed here.I do not have an Android, but apparently you can block them too here. Can I do this at the router level?Life Hacker shows you how to block these annoying cookies at the router level, so ANY computer on the network should get blocked.AuthorRecent Posts. Of the third party to block cookies from them.If a third-party script with the code async src=' sets a cookie, you can specify its “Script URL Pattern” as example-analytics.com.We advise updating the cookie category and its details within the “Uncategorized” category.2. Adding Blocking Code to the ScriptIn order to block the script that is setting cookies prior to the consent, apply the attribute “data-cookieyes” to cookie-setting script tags on your website.Set the value of this attribute to one of the cookie categories “cookieyes-performance”, “cookieyes-functional” and “cookieyes-analytics” in accordance with the types of cookies being set by the script.Example of modifying an existing Google Tag manager-script tag: window.dataLayer = window.dataLayer || []; function gtag(){dataLayer.push(arguments);} gtag('js', new Date()); gtag('config', 'UA-144842869-1');To Block a Custom Script on Your WebsiteTo block any custom scripts that install cookies to which the ‘data-cookieyes’ attribute cannot be added can be blocked as below. You may use the below script to render your script based on visitor consent with the CookieYes banner. function getCookie(key) { const cookies = document.cookie .split(";") .reduce( (ac, cv, i) => Object.assign(ac, { [cv.split("=")[0].trim()]: cv.split("=")[1] }), {} )["cookieyes-consent"]; const { [key]: value } = cookies .split(",") .reduce( (obj, pair) => ( (pair = pair.split(":")), (obj[pair[0]] = pair[1]), obj ), {} ); return value; } if (getCookie("consent") == "yes" && getCookie("analytics") == "yes") { const script = document.createElement("script"); script.setAttribute("src", ""); document.body.appendChild(script); } This script can be pasted into your base HTML file by replacing with the URL of your script file. The category names to be added in the blocking code above are pre-defined in CookieYes. They are ‘functional’, ‘performance’, ‘analytics’, and ‘advertisement’.Giving Granular Control Over the Cookies.CookieYes allows you to classify cookies into categories according to their purpose. This allows the users of the website to enable and disable cookies in each category, giving granular control over the cookies based on their purpose. For example, if your website has cookies in three categories, namely Advertisement, Analytics, and Performance, and the user decides to allow only the Performance cookies, then the scripts for only the “Performance” cookies will be installed on the website when they click on Accept. But toURL and analytics blocking - Uptrends
