For the past two years Baseball Musings tried to help with playing Beat the Streak. The Day by Day Database keeps track of hit streak of at least five games. In addition, two programs produce top ten lists of players with a high probability of a hit. If you find this useful, please support Baseball Musings with a donation. Here are the top picks my programs produced for use in Beat the Streak. This post mostly explains the ideas behind the calculations. In addition, this post shows tests on the Neural Network (NN). This post discusses an NN that includes the ballpark. I updated the models, and the results of those tests are here.First, the Log5 Method picks: 0.333 — Luis Arraez batting against Ross Detwiler. 0.331 — Howie Kendrick batting against Miles Mikolas. 0.330 — Dee Gordon batting against Mitch Keller. 0.329 — Giovanny Urshela batting against Jose Suarez. 0.325 — DJ LeMahieu batting against Jose Suarez. 0.321 — Tom Murphy batting against Mitch Keller. 0.320 — Tim Anderson batting against Martin Perez. 0.312 — Kevin Newman batting against Marco Gonzales. 0.311 — Omar Narvaez batting against Mitch Keller. 0.311 — Anthony Rendon batting against Miles Mikolas.Arraez is a bit of a Rod Carew throw back. He sprays hits hits around the outfield, hits for a high average, and his power is mostly doubles. Here are the neural network picks: 0.331, 0.762 — Howie Kendrick batting against Miles Mikolas. 0.329, 0.755 — Giovanny Urshela batting against Jose Suarez. 0.325, 0.747 — DJ LeMahieu batting against Jose Suarez. 0.333, 0.747 — Luis Arraez batting against Ross Detwiler. 0.320, 0.745 — Tim Anderson batting against Martin Perez. 0.307, 0.745 — Hanser Alberto batting against Trent Thornton. 0.308, 0.743 — Charlie Blackmon batting against Marcus Stroman. 0.312, 0.741 — Kevin Newman batting against Marco Gonzales. 0.298, 0.741 — Jeff McNeil batting against Timothy Melville. 0.310, 0.740 — Bryan Reynolds batting against Marco Gonzales.Kendrick does not always start for the Nationals, but if he’s the most likely player to get a hit this evening, he probably should get the nod. Kendrick is also the consensus
