Security and infrastructure teams—Enable a unified response through the fast detection of a ransomware attack and the subsequent, and enabled, swift recovery.Accelerated time to greater value—With no-added-cost to your current security stack, start detecting anomalies at the same time you start protecting your data. Frequently Asked QuestionsHow does the real-time encryption detection in Zerto work?Zerto, and its Zerto Encryption Analyzer, is built on a foundation of continuous data protection (CDP), a technology widely considered to be the best way to reduce data loss and downtime. The proprietary CDP engine in Zerto has been battle-tested and proven at scale, resulting in thousands of customers achieving RPOs of seconds whether protecting 70 or 700 VMs—or even 7,000 VMs simultaneously.Zerto’s software-only solution applies algorithmic intelligence to alert you within seconds when there’s an encryption anomaly that could signal the start of ransomware’s detonation phase. What are the benefits of encryption detection through Zerto?Zerto CDP is essential to recovery, but this foundation of block-based (not file-based), hypervisor-level replication unlocks five primary benefits for encryption detection as well, including:Real-time: The always-on, near-synchronous replication engine in Zerto unlocks the ability to analyze data on a virtually real-time basis with high degrees of granularity. Agnostic: the type of file being encrypted doesn't matter. Detected encryption is what matters. Adaptive: The Zerto Encryption Analyzer is dynamically adaptive. New or different environmental variables do not require any manual update. Agentless: Zerto does not use any agents on protected VMs, therefore eliminating the opportunity to get these agents disabled or hijacked.Lightweight and non-disruptive: There are no additional components to deploy and configure—Zerto uses the existing Virtual Replication Appliances (VRAs) and Zerto Virtual Managers (ZVMs) that are required for normal CDP and are already lightweight. And the encryption analyses do not interfere with the replication process. What is the ransomware detection method Zerto

Software-only Protection at Any Scale Simple, scalable data protection with an easy-to-deploy, low footprint, software-only architecture Architecture Guide for Zerto Zerto brings together disaster recovery, ransomware resilience and multi-cloud mobility into a single, scalable, software-only solution delivered across on-premises, hybrid, and multi-cloud environments. Zerto combines resilience, mobility and protection into a single, scalable, software-only solution.Zerto consists of five main components that allow you to easily protect, recover, detect, recover and move applications at any scale. The Zerto Managers Other than the actual replication of data, Zerto Manager operates everything needed for replication between the protected and recovery sites. It interacts with the underlying platform and orchestrates recovery, monitors changes, and collects information on entities available for protection within that environment. In virtualized environments, this manager is called a Zerto Virtual Manager (ZVM). In public cloud environments, such as Azure and AWS, Zerto uses a cloud instance called a Zerto Cloud Appliance (ZCA) that is similar to the on-premises ZVM. Learn about the New Powerful Zerto Virtual Manager Appliance (Zerto 10)Virtual Replication Appliances A virtual replication appliance (VRA) is a purpose-built software appliance installed on the hosts where virtual applications will be protected, delivering a true scale-out architecture. This appliance continuously replicates the data from protected entities to its local and/or remote target, where it then stores the data in the journal. This same scale-out appliance also copies data from the journal to immutable repositories for additional resilience. In public cloud environments, Zerto scales replication using a cloud-native scale-out architecture.Zerto Replication Appliance Overview Protection Groups Zerto's protection, recovery, and mobility are all configured through virtual protection groups (VPGs). Today, an application is rarely run on a single server. Instead, most applications have multiple VM dependencies. Minutes, enabling rapid recovery and minimal downtime. Zerto's Recovery Time Objective is excellent. In the past, if a virtual machine crashed, we would recover it from a snapshot, which could take one to two hours. With Zerto, the recovery process takes only five minutes, and users are typically unaware of any disruption. This allows us to restore everything quickly and efficiently. Zerto has significantly reduced our downtime. When malware affects our data, Zerto immediately notifies us and helps us protect other applications, even those not yet implemented with Zerto. By monitoring these applications, we can quickly identify and address any potential malware spread, minimizing downtime across our systems. Zerto significantly reduces downtime and associated costs during disruptions. Our services are unified, so in the event of a disruption without Zerto, even a half-day disruption would necessitate offline procedures. This would lead to increased manpower, service delays, and substantial financial losses due to interrupted admissions and other critical processes. By unifying service processes, Zerto minimizes the impact of outages. Zerto streamlines our disaster recovery testing across multiple locations by enabling efficient failover testing without disrupting live services. Traditionally, DR testing required downtime of critical systems, but Zerto's replication and failover capabilities allow us to test in parallel with live operations. This non-disruptive approach ensures continuous service availability while validating our DR plan, even in scenarios like malware attacks, by creating a separate testing environment that mirrors the live setup. This comprehensive testing provides confidence in our ability to handle real-world incidents. Uses?Zerto’s encryption analyzer uses a signatureless approach to detect encryption. It assesses data patterns and analyzes entropy to detect unusual encryption that may indicate the locking phase of a ransomware attack has begun. However, unlike other vendors using this approach—which are usually purpose-built data security or cybersecurity vendors—Zerto’s real-time detection is coupled with recovery.WHAT OUR CLIENTS SAY"Zerto 10 will play a key role in delivering effective data protection and disaster recovery in an environment of increased cyberthreats. We have been reviewing our systems OS and installed software to ensure they are running supported versions. We see that the Zerto application comes with SQL Server 2014 (Express). We have not updated to the lastest release of Zerto yet and are wondering if the latest Zerto release comes with an update to SQL, or whether we can install the SP 3 update ourselves to stay in compliance. Any assistance or suggestions would be appreciated. --> Hello,Mike from Zerto here. You would need to upgrade SQL manually. Please see the below steps:Note: This requires downtime for the ZVM and may require a restart of the ZVM VM.Steps to upgrade Microsoft SQL Server Express:Stop all Zerto services and take a snapshot of the VM.Download the Microsoft SQL Server Express SP3 64-bit installer for LocalDB (ENU\x64\SqlLocalDB.msi): running the installer it will produce a warning: “A lower version of this product has been detected on your system. Would you like to upgrade your existing installation?”Click ‘Yes’ to continue the installation of the new version.Once the installer has completed, you may receive the message “You must restart your system for the configuration changes made to Microsoft SQL Server 2014 Express LocalDB to take effect. Click Yes to restart now or No if you plan to manually restart later.” Click ‘Yes’.After rebooting the Microsoft SQL Server 2014 Express LocalDB version will be 12.3.6024.0Log on to the ZVM GUI and verify that the environment is healthy. If there are any unexpected issues then collect logs using the Zerto Diagnostic application and contact Zerto Support for assistance. The snapshot taken before the upgrade can be used to revert to a known good state, after the collection and storage/upload of logs covering any unexpected issue. Hello Mike,This is great! Thank you! We have 2 Zerto servers. I’m assuming we are stopping the services on 1 system, updating SQL, rebooting, logging into the GUI to ensure all is OK, and then performing the same steps on the 2nd. Would that be accurate? I want to ensure we aren’t breaking anything when the 1st system reboots and is using a different version of SQL than the other system. Thanks,Lauren Hello Lauren,Yes, that would be accurate.Comments
