One of the easiest “set it and forget it” Anti-Spyware utilities is JavaCool’s SpywareBlaster. Instead of waiting to scan and eliminate spyware after the PC is already infected, it guards against spyware ever infecting your computer in the first place. SpywareBlaster is unique in the way it works, by disabling a known list of spyware related to Active X controls and integrating with both Internet Explorer and Firefox. It flags items in the registry and an associated spy process will not be able to run on the system. Using SpywareBlaster Installation is fast and easy… after a few setup selections you can close SpywareBlaster and go about your web surfing. When starting out a quick tutorial gets you rolling, basically letting you know what you expect out of the program. On the next screen you will be prompted about updates. If you want an Automatic Updating subscription it will only set you back $9.95/year, but this is not required to get the full functionality of the program, you will just need to manually check for protection updates. After successful installation you will see Protection Status on the user interface. As you can see the last database loaded into this download is from June of this year. From here you can enable protection for Internet Explorer and Firefox . What I like to do is get all of the updates first before enabling the protection. From the options on the left click on Updates. Click Updates on the left side and then hit the “Check for Updates” button. After SpywareBlaster has a successful update its protection database you will get a confirmation message. Now all you need to do is go back to the Protection Status section and click the “Enable All Protection” link and wait a short period for everything to update. When all the protection updates have been applied you will notice the Protection Status turn green and protection enabled for Internet Explorer , updated Restricted Sites, and Firefox . I regularly update and use Malware Bytes and cclener.Recently while reading "how did I get infected" on Geeks-to-go I came across a number of spyware programes namely "SPYWARE BLASTER" "SUPER ANTI SPYWARE" "SPYWARE GUARD".I downloaded and installed spyware blaster.I wish to know which one of the above mentioned anti-spywares have good detection and protection mechanism. Should I installed all the three or only one? If possible can the best one be prescribed?Further which firewall should be installed? Is it really required? Also installing so much of above security programmes, will they adversly affect the performance of the system? It also provides protection for Mozilla Firefox, Netscape, Seamonkey, and Flock. SpywareBlaster restricts the actions of potentially dangerous sites by adding a list of sites and domains associated with known spyware, advertisers and marketers to the browser's "Restricted Sites Zone" and prevents the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted software. Some types of malware are known to mess with Trusted Zones, Ranges and ProtocolDefaults set for a browser. How does SpywareBlaster work? It adds sites to the restricted zones by adding the domain as a subkey under the registry key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\Domains. A dword is then added to that domain named * and given a hex value of 4 to specify that it is part of the Restricted Sites Zone. More specifically, Spywareblaster sets the "killbit" on the CLSID (Class ID) of known spyware. Every program has a CLSID that is unique to the type of program. Once Spywareblaster enables (writes) those killbits they are "locked in" and any identified spyware cannot be opened. Spywareblaster writes these killbits in and then stays off until you need to re-write them again with an update. Unlike many other security tools, SpywareBlaster does not run in the background. But I've come across which appears to be an obvious bug.Whenever I download new updates for SB and enable protection, it takes over 5 minutes for the enabling to complete. The green progress bar goes about half way then slows to a crawl. While it is continuing to enable, my other programs may become very slow to respond. After the enabling protection is done, things go back to normal.The interesting thing is that it slows down only on the IE protection and Restricted sites protection. When it gets to Firefox protection it goes very quickly.I just wanted to point out that the slowdown occurred right after I installed IE7. When I was using IE6, protection only took about 10 seconds to enable, maybe 20 at most.Has anyone else had this problem? Is there a known fix for this issue?Hoping someone can help as this is a very annoying problem....even though Spywareblaster only updates every couple of weeks. Thanks in advance!!
