Firewall could contribute to a remote desktop not working, but it's quite common. Some organizations configure their corporate firewall to block outbound RDP traffic, thereby preventing connectivity to remote systems. It's also common for organizations to make it so that an RDP session can only be connected through a VPN. To avoid firewall problems, ensure that the port your remote desktop software uses is open on any firewalls residing between client computers and the server they connect to. Remote Desktop Protocol-based tools use RDP port 3389 by default. You can check to make sure that the Windows Defender Firewall service allows RDP traffic and update general firewall settings by completing these steps: Open the Control Panel by entering Control at the Windows Run prompt. Click System and Security. Click Windows Defender Firewall. Click Allow an Appor Feature Through Windows Defender Firewall. Select the Remote Desktop option. Click OK. The Control Panel setting that shows Windows Defender Firewall allowing RDP traffic on port 3389. 3. SSL certificate issues Security certificates can also cause remote desktop connection problems. Many VDI products use SSL encryption for users that access VDI sessions outside the network perimeter. But SSL encryption requires the use of certificates, which creates two problems that can cause a remote desktop to not work. First, if remote desktops are going to connect properly, client computers must trust the certificate authority that issued the certificate. This isn't usually a problem for organizations that purchase certificates from large, well-known authorities, but clients won't

Hi, I have very similar problem. When I try to connect to Windows 10 client from Mac via RDP via external IP address the client connects, I can enter the user password for login and as soon as the desktop shows up it freezes and soon after gray reconnecting screen appears, after reconnecting few seconds elapse and again the same scenario. When I connect via VPN and then via RDP using local IP (intranet IP of the RDP client) the connection works fine without reconnecting. It is surely no connection issue as VPN adds some overhead and the RDP works fine while direct RDP protocol via external IP has some problems causing reconnection issues. I was trying to fix that by disabling temporarily the Windows Defender Firewall completely and disabling the Antivirus protection, but it did not change anything. Did anyone face similar problems and perhaps found any solution? Any clue why via VPN the RDP works seamlessly and using external IP it constantly tries to reconnect? What is interesting when I connect to Windows Server 2019 Standard via RDP it works fine both via external IP and via VPN intranet IP. The mouse is very slow to respond to movement, the cursor shakes, and freezes. This problem can be related to the high DPI and polling rate settings of some optical mice (usually gaming mice). For example, the popular Logitech G203 mouse has a default polling rate of 1000 times per second (1000 Hz). A high mouse polling rate seems to cause a high load on the RDP connection, and you may encounter lags when working with RemoteApps. If you reduce this value to 125 times per second (125 Hz), the mouse problem in the RDP session will disappear. You can reduce the Polling Rate using the vendor’s mouse tools. If you can’t reduce the polling rate, try to disable the mouse cursor shadow (uncheck the Enable pointer shadow option) and select the None scheme for the pointer in the mouse settings in the Windows Control Panel (main.cpl).Slow RemoteAPP, Mouse, and Menu Lags after Windows 10 UpgradeUsers may experience performance issues with RemoteApps published on Windows Server 2019/2016/2012R2 RDS servers after the Windows 10 build upgrade.
