A separate frozen sample must be submitted for each test requiring a frozen specimen. A frozen specimen should be held in a freezer at 0°C to -20°C unless a specific test requires the specimen to be frozen at -70°C (dry ice).If you have after-hours pickup for frozen specimens, label the tube with a permanent marker. (Water-soluble markers may wash off with freezing and transport.) Place the tube(s) in a designated freezer. Prepare the silver gel packs that fit into the Frozen Specimen Keeper by making sure that they also are frozen. As late as possible before the lockbox is to be put out, place the frozen transport tube in the Frozen Specimen Keeper between the silver frozen gel packs. These containers can keep frozen specimens frozen, but they will not be able to freeze specimens at room temperature or refrigerated specimens. Refer to the Frozen Specimen Keeper instructions for use for further details.Put the Frozen Specimen Keeper containing the specimens in your lockbox according to the pictorial instructions provided (see link above). These have a thicker consistency and are more concentrated so you’ll need to drink around 150ml (a plastic cup full) or more of water with them.What flavour? You need to find a flavour that you can tolerate and enjoy. This is simply a case of trial and error - don’t bulk-buy until you know you like the gels and the flavour!For more experienced runners or those who have practised them in training there’s option to have caffeine gels too. Most, if not every brand, produces a caffeine gel and then the exact same gel minus the caffeine. There are also gels with ‘special ingredients’ like dietary nitrates.Below are examples of some gels. There are many other brands too, but for ease I have picked out these commonly used gels. The other brands do the same job:Powerbar Produces Powergel original gel and Powergel fruit (some real fruit juice is added to this gel so the taste is different). There are 26/27grams of carbs per gel and you’ll need to drink with these. There is no caffeine in these. If you want to try a lighter consistency, try Powergel hydro. This has 26g of carbs and needs no water, but it also has 50mg of caffeine.As an alternative to a gel, Powerbar do Powerbar shots. These are sweets with 5g of carbs per sweet, both with or without caffeine. Five sweet/shots equals one gel. These sweets will suit if you like to drip-feed your fuel in the race - rather than consuming two gels per hour you’ll take a sweet every 10 minutes or so.
